We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.
Recommendation of the Week:
Food, Inc. (Xbox 360/Zune Video)
You cram food in your mouth every day, but do you ever really think about where it comes from? This is especially timely a day after the American holiday that’s all about stuffing as much food as you possibly can down your gullet and surviving.
Food, Inc. takes a hard look at the corporate food industry in America, and you’ll be surprised how many different labels and brands are owned by so few companies. It’ll make you think twice about buying food in the future, or even finishing what’s already on your plate. Hopefully someone will make a documentary about Joel Salatin, a rancher in the film who you’ll write off as a redneck at first glance, but who quickly becomes one of the sole voices of wisdom in the movie. This guy needs to take over the entire FDA.
Read on for the rest of the recommendations, and as usual, we’ll see you at the popcorn sta — well, actually, we won’t see you at all. But you catch our drift. Plus, be sure to tell us what you’ll be watching, or what you’ve seen recently that bowled you over.

Do you have a PS3? What about a device that is certified to play DivX movies and videos?

Well if you do, then you’re in luck, because DivX is giving away one free movie in the DivX format from a selection of classic/interesting choices, including Batman Begins, Ace Ventura and the animated movie, Green Lantern: First Flight.
You’ll need to follow a few steps to claim your free movie, however, including downloading and installing the latest version of DivX on your computer, signing up for a DivX account, getting a special code from your PlayStation 3’s System Settings and downloading a small file to enable video-on-demand playback on your system.
If you’re willing to go through all of that, you’ll be rewarded with a free movie!
Good luck!

Gamers worried that the upcoming Prince of Persia film would fall prey to the videogame to film adaptation curse can breathe easy.
The first trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer’s film adaptation of Ubisoft’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ has surfaced and it clearly shows that producer Bruckheimer has spared no expense, holding true to his word that it will not be one of his smaller productions.
Disney’s adaptation of Prince of Persia is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral) while Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia creator) and Boaz Yakin wrote the script.
The film sees the 6th century prince Dastan (played by a beefed up Jake Gyllenhaal) joining forces with Princess Tamina (Gemma Aterton from James Bond Quantum of Solace) to prevent the Sands of Time from falling into hands of villain Nizam (Ben Kingsley).
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is expected to be released on the circuit on the 28th of May in the US. Watch almost two and a half minutes of the Prince of Persia adventure below. A slightly higher resolution version is available for you to gawk at here.

We weren’t surprised when the first of three episodes in the Assassin’s Creed: Lineage miniseries, created by Hybride Studios, exceeded our expectations. These folks did the effects for 300 and Sin City — so of course we knew it would look great. Our surprise simply came from the fact that Lineage is a promotional, game-based short film; and nearly all of the words in that phrase seem contrary to high quality. Share in our surprise by watching the first Lineage installment after the jump.
If you’d like a bit of behind-the-scenes info into how the film was created, check out this GamesIndustry.biz interview with Ubisoft UK marketing director Murray Pannel. He does a good job of clearly explaining the game and movie industry synergy — you know, what James Cameron alluded to during his fateful, four-week-long E3 2009 speech.

According to a Variety report, the currently on-hold Bioshock movie has recently had a new director attached to the project as previous director, Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) steps down, although he will still remain on the project as a producer.
Relative newcomer to Hollywood, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director and writer on zombie movie 28 Weeks Later (the sequel to 28 Days Later), has been named as the new director of the movie adaptation of Take-Two’s underwater adventure FPS.
For budgetary and tax concerns, shooting for the movie has switched from within the US to less expensive ‘overseas’ locations, due to concerns over the proposed budget which had ballooned to $160 million during pre-production.
Filming outside of the US will drastically reduce this cost, but because of the switch, Verbinski won’t be able to be directly involved with the film (in a directorial role) due to his demanding schedule (he’s currently locked into directing the Johnny Depp-voiced animated movie, Rango), leaving it to Fresnadillo to take care of business.
This change in directors is still subject to a decision by Take-Two, who hold the rights to director approval.
Well, at least it’s nice to know the movie is going forward.

Variety reports that Universal Pictures is in negotiations with 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo over the position of director for the BioShock adaptation. The project was originally to be directed by Gore Verbinski, who remains a producer on the title, and who set aside plans to direct a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie for BioShock. According to Variety, Verbinski opted out of BioShock due to the studio’s decision to move production overseas.
Take-Two still has the right to approve a director for the adaptation. While the company must have been pleased with a big name like Verbinski attached to the project, it may also be pleased with the undoubtedly lower cost of a non-Verbinski.

The Halo movie may be dead to Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson, but it’s apparently not dead dead, as IESB reports Spielberg is in negotiations to produce the feature film. Spielberg only had to read Stuart Beattie’s script before wanting to tackle the project, IESB claims, which focuses on The Fall of Reach, the prequel to the original Halo game written by Eric Nylund.
This likely comes as either bad news or good news, depending on your feelings toward Spielberg these days. Some enjoyed his recent Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while others still remember those stupid walkie-talkies.

Variety reports “vidgame” (seriously, Variety, stop that!) Dead Space is going to the big screen under the watchful gaze of Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso. The producers and EA are currently talking to screenwriters and will then auction the movie to a studio. EA created a bidding war last year when it auctioned off God of War-esque Dante’s Inferno — even before it officially announced the game. The publisher also currently has Sims, Army of Two and Mass Effect movies in varying stages of development.
The Variety piece also mentions that EA is “working on the second and third installments” of the Dead Space franchise. Although that can be interpreted to mean sequels to the main game, it could also mean Extraction and the expected sequel. We’re following up with Variety and EA for clarification and will update when we hear back.

As you may have heard, yesterday’s Gearsiverse panel at San Diego Comic Con was light on news regarding the film adaptation of Epic’s Gears of War franchise, save for one small detail — it wouldn’t feature Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in any capacity. Director Len Wiseman forthrightly explained why, and in the process, likely hurt the wrestler-turned-actor’s (so, basically actor-turned-actor’s) feelings — he told the crowd that “a Doom connection would not be smart for us.”
We highly doubt that most people immediately associate Mr. Johnson’s body of work with that first-person romp/cinematic nightmare — regardless, Wiseman said he’s “looking for an actor for the role and then [I'll] put him into shape.” Why waste all that time and effort? Dwayne Johnson is already the only human being on Earth that actually looks like one of the space marines featured in Epic’s blockbuster franchise. Scar his face up a bit and you’re good to go, man.
