This week, we get our first taste of Nintendo’s new WiiWare demos. Surprisingly, it didn’t take Nintendo that long to flip the switch for North America, considering the company revealed the long-overdue feature — and day-one annoyance — only earlier this month. And on top of the free trial versions of select WiiWare titles (five total this week!), there are also two new Virtual Console titles to enjoy, as well as three new DSiWare games. Hit the break for the full list.

This week’s content for European Nintendo fans is quite the bevy of scrumptious content. There’s a new chapter in the Tales of Monkey Island franchise to laugh through, as well as some new stuff for your little ne’er-do-well in My Life as a Darklord. If WiiWare isn’t your thing, you could always shoot everything in sight in some R-Type on the Virtual Console. See? Totally a bevy.
- You, Me, and the Cubes (WiiWare, 1 -2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 2: The Siege of Spinner Cay (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Sexy Poker (WiiWare, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord – Palom ally add-on (WiiWare, 1 player, 200 Wii Points)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord – Living Room Set add-on (WiiWare, 1 player, 400 Wii Points)
- R-Type (Sega Master System, 1 – 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam (DSiWare, 500 DSi Points)

The Japanese release of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord now kind of bridges the main Final Fantasy series and the Crystal Chronicles series, in a fanservice-y sort of way, thanks to the addition of Final Fantasy IV The After Years-inspired downloadable costumes.
For 200 points each, players can download Rydia and Porom costumes, which allow the use of fire or cyclone magic once per stage. Kain and Palom appear as summoned monsters, also for 200 points each — Kain uses physical attacks against invading heroes, and Palom uses Slow magic and other spells.
It’s great to see Square Enix is happy to charge for tiny chunks of Final Fantasy IV The After Years even in other games.

This week, Square Enix’s WiiWare follow-up to My Life as a King finally releases. We’ve heard favorable things about My Life as a Darklord, but could it be worth 1,000 Wii Points? While we can’t answer that yet (mostly because weekly content doesn’t unlock until 12pm ET), we will say that if it’s anywhere near as fun as My Life as a King, it’s probably going to be worth keeping an eye on.

It’s a very momentous week for the PAL Virtual Console. Not only is it (still) a Hanabi Festival, the 300th Virtual Console game has been released in the region. It’s either the wonderful Compile shooter MUSHA or the Konami table tennis game Smash Table Tennis, so … let’s say it’s MUSHA. It sure took a while for Smash Table Tennis to show up, though.
This news managed to overshadow the launch of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord, but don’t miss it if you want to play a tower defense game … from inside the tower!
- MUSHA (Mega Drive, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)
- Smash Table Tennis (Famicom Disk System, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord (WiiWare, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points)
- A Little Bit of … Puzzle League (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points)

“Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord may have a name that’s similar to predecessor My Life as a King,” Andriasang writes, “but the two games are nothing alike.” So much for the dream of running an evil town full of evil adventurers.
Instead, Andriasang describes the WiiWare game as a unique variation of tower defense. As heroes storm your tower, you delay their progress by adding floors to the structure and filling them with monsters. The strategy comes not only from managing your resources enough to build as many floors as you can, but also in placing things so that there isn’t too much stuff on one floor. If there is, the heroes can just skip over a floor!
See a video of the game in action after the break.

Despite being loaded with content, this week’s Japanese Virtual Console and WiiWare offerings are unlikely to excite, with one major exception. Square Enix’s My Life as a King follow-up arrives in Japan this week, allowing players to run the tower fortress of their dreams! It’s joined by a, uh, doll game, and … a brain training game … for kids.
Virtual Console this week offers one really cute Namco arcade game, and another Jinguuji Saburo detective game, which we’ll never see.
