Japanese Media Create Hardware Sales for week ending 6/12: Wii tops with 106K units sold

December 11th, 2009 at 01:39am Under Wii / Nintendo

Black Wii Small

The Wii has shot to the top of the Japanese hardware chart, outselling the nearest competitor by over 30 000 units and doubling its sales from last week of 46 673 units. The latest Media Create figures show that the Wii sold 106 555 units for the week ending the 6th of December.

The sales boost was due to the debut of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in Japan which sold 935 000 copies in its opening week, breaking sales records across the land and becoming the biggest sales debut for a Wii game ever after the title sold 422 000 units on its first day of availability. The game also beat Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which sold 816 000 copies in one week) in terms of first week sales numbers for the region.

Samurai Warriors 3 for the Wii also debuted strongly at number 4 with 121 000 copies, while PokePark Wii: Picahu’s Great Adventure was this week’s third new Wii entry in the Top 10, debuting at number 7 with 64 000 copies. Wii Fit Plus also continues to sell well in ninth with 52 000 copies.

The PSP also received a nice sales boost thanks to the debut of Phantasy Star Portable in second place with 287 000 copies and Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam Vs. Gundam Next Plus in third with 223 000 copies. The PSP sold 67 880 units, up quite substantially from last week’s 38 839 units. The PS3 remains in third place with 57 782 units, up roughly 10 000 units from last week possibly due to Assassin’s Creed II for the PS3 debuting in tenth place with 49 000 copies.

The DSi LL, now in its third week of release, dropped to 53 791 units from last week’s tally of 67 243 units which placed it at number 1. The DSi followed with 51 635 units, climbing from last week’s 37 021, and the DS Lite with 8 367 units, up marginally from last week’s 7 268. The Xbox 360 also saw a slight sales increase to 5 314 units, (up from last week’s 3 685) while the PSPgo just managed to outsell the PS2 with 3 412 units against 2 277.

The release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in Japan has broken Nintendo’s own sales records for the publisher’s Wii console, becoming the biggest sales debut for a Wii game ever with an enormous 422 000 units sold on its first day of availability.

The title then went on to sell 936 734 copies over the rest of the week in Japan, edging in ahead of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which only managed 816 000 units sold in one week) in terms of first week sales numbers for the region.

The prophecy that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime and research firm EEDAR mentioned a while back may just become true after all.

Modern Warfare 2 Banner Image

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has once again claimed the No. 1 spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this week, beating last week’s contenders Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the punch.

Modern Warfare 2’s sales are down 32% from the previous week, which it seems is more than enough to keep Assassin’s Creed II at No. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 3, both of which are non-movers from last week.

Fifa 10 manages to step up to No. 4 from No. 6 last week, as Wii Sports Resort swaps places, moving down to No. 6 this week from No. 4. Wii Fit Plus in between is another non-mover at No. 5.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games also takes a quick walk upwards, from No. 8 to No. 7 this week, Left 4 Dead 2 exchanges positions by moving down to No. 8 from No. 7, Forza Motorsport 3 is yet another non-mover at No. 9, and F1 2009 moves into the coveted Top Ten by sliding into No. 10 from No. 11 last week.

Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training moving up to No. 18 this week from No. 26, Dragon Age: Origins slipping to No. 20 from No. 17, DJ Hero vaulting into No. 21 from No. 35 last week, Rabbids Go Home careening into No. 23 from No. 40, Tekken 6 fighting its way to No. 26 this week from No. 33, and Halo 3: ODST tumbling to the last spot (No. 40) from No. 34 last week.

UK Software Sales for week ending 21/11: Modern Warfare 2 fends off AC II, L4D 2

November 23rd, 2009 at 06:40am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Banner Image

For the second week in a row, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken perch atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, fending off valiant advances from newcomers such as Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the process.

Sales of Modern Warfare 2 this past week dropped a massive 86% from its enormous launch week, which makes this chart topping feat all the more impressive.

Assassin’s Creed II (releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP) debuts at No. 2, outperforming the original entry to the series by 12% on launch week (although the original title notably shot straight to No. 1 in its first week of sales in 2007).

New Super Mario Bros. Wii also makes its first chart appearance, only below Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3, while two other Nintendo titles, Wii Sports Resort (sales down 10%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 10%) take positions 4 and 5 respectively (dropping from No. 2 and No. 4 respectively).

Fifa 10 (sales down 5%) drops from No. 3 to No. 6 this week, as Left 4 Dead 2, another debut title in the UK, charts at No. 7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games steps down to No. 8 this week from No. 6, Forza Motorsport 3 falls to No. 9 from No. 5 last week, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame appears at No. 10, moving down from No. 7 last week.

Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes the debut of Codemasters’ Formula One racing game, F1 2009 on Wii and PSP at No. 11, the debut of LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues at No. 16, Dragon Age: Origins slipping down to No. 17 from No. 13 last week and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City falling to No. 21 from No. 10 last week.

Meanwhile, Football Manager 2010 fumbles its way to No. 23 from No. 12, Style Boutique shoots up the chart to No. 25 this week from No. 40, Uncharted 2 trips and falls to No. 29 from No. 18, Tekken 6 drops to No. 33 from No. 20 last week, DJ Hero continues its poor performance by slipping down further to No. 35 from No. 27, and LittleBigPlanet re-enters the chart at No. 38 thanks to the release of the PSP version.

The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft)
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii. (Nintendo)
  • Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
  • Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
  • FIFA 10 (EA)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve)
  • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo)
  • Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft)
  • LEGO Batman: The Videogame (Warner Bros. Interactive)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii launches in Europe and South Africa

November 20th, 2009 at 11:00am Under Wii / Nintendo

While those of us living in any region that isn’t known as North America have had to wait a few days to get their hands on the game, it’s surely been worth the wait, as New Super Mario Bros. Wii launches across Europe and South Africa today.

Including eight all-new worlds, new gameplay modes and new power-ups, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is also the first game in the series to allow up to four players to play cooperatively in the same level, with classic, solid 2D platforming action we’ve come to expect from a Mario title.

EEDAR predicts New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2

November 11th, 2009 at 10:04am Under Wii / Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Banner Image

In statements that seem to back up the words of Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime, market analyst Jesse Divnich from the research firm Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) has said how the firm believes that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will ultimately outsell the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – a game that is widely believed to be the most anticipated game of the year.

“EEDAR feels comfortable to make the prediction that the New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii will be one of the top titles this holiday season,” wrote Divnich in a preview report of NPD’s US videogame sales.

“While in the short-term the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may surpass New Super Mario Bros.,” the report continued, “in the long-term New Super Mario Bros. will easily become the best selling title released in 2009 with expected lifetime sales exceeding 15 million units worldwide.”

“It is a good possibility that New Super Mario Bros. could outsell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and all of its versions throughout its lifetime.”

Modern Warfare 2 Logo

While EEDAR believes that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will continue the evergreen sales trend of Nintendo’s previous titles, such as Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, Divnich did stipulate that one of the major contributors to this prediction is due to the presence of yearly editions of Call of Duty, and those entries’ affect on subsequent releases in the franchise, resulting in waning demand for previous games:

”A title like New Super Mario Bros. is a style of game that only comes along once every four years and gives it incredible legs on retail shelves,” Divnich wrote.

While this prediction is a little less aggressive than that of Nintendo’s Fils-Aime, it does point to one of the reasons that Nintendo’s titles continually manage to sell in excess of 10 million units during their lifetime, while other development companies consistently cannibalise their own software sales by releasing annual entries to their games.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released worldwide yesterday (November 10th), but we’ll have to wait for the sales battle to begin when New Super Mario Bros. Wii releases on November 15th in North America and November 20th in Europe.

Reggie Fils-Aime: New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2

November 6th, 2009 at 08:15am Under Wii / Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Banner Image

In the latest episode of GameTrailers TV, president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, has made an extremely bold statement regarding the sales figures of his company’s upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii in comparison to those of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

According to Fils-Aime, New Super Mario Bros. Wii will have outsold Modern Warfare 2 on a single platform (using the Xbox 360 as an example) by the time the January NPD data is released. Speaking to the show’s host, Geoff Keighley, about the possibility of this happening, Fils-Aime said:

“You’ve gotta give me the entire holiday selling season, right, so let’s take it all the way through the January NPD data… yes, I’ll take that [bet].”

This claim is backed up by statements from the likes of Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who said that it’s “gonna shock you how many units” NSMBW will sell, while executive VP of Merchandising and Marketing at GameStop, Tony Bartel (the same executive who recently hyped up Modern Warfare 2’s projected sales) said that NSMBW is “going to be a strong seller for the holiday.”

But will the sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii beat those of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this holiday? You can read El33tonline’s hands-on preview with New Super Mario Bros. Wii to decide for yourself.
