Nintendo: NSMB Wii has sold 2 million in US

December 11th, 2009 at 04:15pm Under DS

Yesterday’s NPD announcement that New Super Mario Bros. Wii had sold 1.4 million copies in the November NPD period was impressive. But Nintendo topped it today by noting that, including sales after the NPD cutoff date, the game has reached a total of two million copies. It’s not Modern Warfare 2 or anything, but it is a very strong start for a game that is likely to have a very long tail. Even just in November, it easily beat New Super Mario Bros.’s first month on DS (which, admittedly, was May and not November).

Nintendo also announced that the Wii has reached a US installed base of 23 million, and that the DS broke the November handheld sales record set by … the DS.

Nintendo responds to November NPD results: Wii and DS set records, Wii install base crosses 23 mil in US

December 11th, 2009 at 03:17am Under Wii / Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Nintendo has responded to the November NPD results by praising its record-setting month, but with almost 3 million hardware units sold last month you can hardly blame them.

Nintendo claimed the top two spots on the hardware chart, representing over half of all videogame systems sold in the US in November. The DS sold almost 1.7 million units in November, setting a record for the most handheld videogame systems sold in the month of November and beating the previous record of 1.57 million held by the Nintendo DS in 2008. Meanwhile the Wii sold over 1.25 million units in November, making it the fastest-selling home console to reach the 23 million install base in the US.

Wii Console Smaller

Nintendo also performed well on the software side of things, with four games published for Nintendo consoles in the Top 10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii finished at number 3 with 1.4 million units after launching on the 15th of November. The publisher’s internal sales figures show that the new Mario title has already passed the two million sales mark when December sales are included. Wii Sports Resort charted at number 6 with 580 000 copies, Wii Fit Plus at number 7 with 490 000 copies and Mario Kart Wii at number 10 with 310 000 copies.

Nintendo also revealed that six of the Top 10 best-selling games of 2009 until November play on Nintendo systems. Wii Fit features at number 2 with 3.5 million, Wii Sports Resort at number 3 with 2.4 million, Mario Kart Wii at number 4 with 2.2 million, Wii Play at number 5 with 2.1 million, Pokemon Platinum at number 6 with 1.9 million and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at number 10 with 1.4 million. Wii Fit Plus is also a favourite among gamers with 1.1 million units sold as of the end of November.

“Nintendo products top Amazon.com’s Most Wished For and Most Gifted lists for video games, and Wii remains at or near the top of the most-searched for video game terms on Yahoo!,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “As families and friends gather for the holidays, Nintendo games offer the best shared experiences.”

NPD: November videogame sales decrease 7.6% to $2.7 bil in US, Modern Warfare 2 sells over 6 mil

December 11th, 2009 at 02:30am Under Uncategorized

Modern Warfare 2 Box Art

While November was a blockbuster month which saw AAA titles such as Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Assassin’s Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins hitting shelves across the US, the latest data from US tracking firm NPD Group shows that sales of the videogame industry in the US fell by 7.6% to $2.699 billion in November.

Despite the knock-on effect that these best-selling titles had in boosting sales of their respective consoles, hardware sales also recorded a decrease this past month, down 13.4% to $1.05 billion. And even software sales suffered a 3.1% decline to $1.406 billion, while accessories dropped by 5.5% to $242.2 million.

Nintendo once again dominated the hardware side of things, with the Nintendo DS selling an impressive 1.7 million units and the Wii not too far behind with 1.26 million units. The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3, with Microsoft’s console recording sales of 819 500 units and Sony’s 710 400. The PSP followed with 293 900 units and the PS2 with 203 100.

Modern Warfare 2 dominates

As expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ruled the software roost with a combined total of 6.07 million copies sold during November. The Xbox 360 version triumphed at number 1 with a whopping 4.2 million copies sold, followed by the PS3 version in second place with 1.87 million copies.

According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level. Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September ‘07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3’s daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November.”

“While this year’s top-selling item bested last year’s by 283%, it couldn’t make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year.”

New Super Mario Bros. Wii proved that Mario still has what it takes, debuting at number 3 with 1.39 million copies. Assassin’s Creed II for the Xbox 360 was new at number 4 with 794 700 copies, while the PS3 version also debuted in the Top 10 at number 8 with 448 400 copies. Left 4 Dead 2 for the Xbox 360 entered the charts at number 5 with 744 000 copies while Dragon Age: Origins for the Xbox 360 was new at number 9 with 362 100 copies.

Nintendo also claimed another three spots in the Top 10 with evergreens Wii Sports Resort at number 6 with 720 200, Wii Fit Plus at number 7 with 679 000 copies and Mario Kart Wii in tenth with 315 000 copies.

Looking ahead

However, Frazier believes it’s not all gloom and doom despite the decline in the industry. “The industry declined 7.6% versus last November, but still produced enough revenue to make this month the second-best November in industry history. YTD the industry is still up 7% over 2007. I think we all have to realize the incredible year that was 2008.”

“Based on seasonality the industry looks like it will reach $20B for the year, which means December would have to be up over last year by 11%. Impossible? I don’t think so. More positive economic news combined with ‘frugal fatigue’ could positively impact industry sales during these last weeks of the holiday season. Breaking even seems more out of reach. In order to break even to last year, December sales would have to be up 36% over December 2008.”

Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg talks ‘best-ever November in Xbox 360 history’

December 11th, 2009 at 12:20am Under Xbox 360

After two months of trailing the PS3 in monthly NPD sales – thanks in no small part to the success of the PS3 Slim – the Xbox 360 has taken the lead once again. And Microsoft was quick to offer spokesman Aaron Greenberg for a chat, to explain why they’re calling this November the “best-ever November in Xbox 360 history.”

“In the month of November, consumers spent more money at retail on Xbox 360 than they did on the Wii or the PS3,” Greenberg tells Joystiq. “If you look at total consumer spend across hardware, software, and accessories, it was $838 million. And if you look at software games, specifically third-party software games, we sold more games than the PS3 and the Wii combined.” This emphasis on the entire “ecosystem” – including console sales, and software and accessories – is behind Microsoft’s “best-ever” claim. In fact, though the Xbox 360 did sell over 100K more units than the PlayStation 3, console sales were down 2% year-over-year.

“We’re essentially flat, year over year. It’s down 2%, technically, if you just look at hardware sales,” Greenberg admits. Whether the Wii was on top or whether Microsoft’s November sales are the best in the console’s history, all comes down to a question of focus. “What scoreboard are you using?” Greenberg asks.

November NPD: Modern Warfare 2 sells 6 million, DS dominates hardware

December 10th, 2009 at 09:35pm Under Xbox 360

The US games industry’s performance numbers are out for November and, as expected, software sales were lead dominated by Activision / Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game sold 4.2 million copies during the month on Microsoft’s console, while the version for Sony’s machine sold 1.9 million. Coming in an extremely strong second was New Super Mario Bros. Wii at 1.4 million copies, proving that 1) people still love the plumber and 2) if a Wii game is published by Nintendo, it sells like crazy (well, unless it also has “Wii Music” in its title).

Nintendo lead in hardware sales, with the number of DS units sold skyrocketing by 262% to 1.7 million units — that’s better than the same month last year. Wii sold over two million last November; this year it hit 1.26 million for the month, indicative of the year-long decline in sales the console’s been experiencing. Its competitors, Xbox 360 and PS3, sold 820 thousand and 710 thousand units, respectively.

-DS: 1.7M1.2M (+262%)
-Wii: 1.26M753K (+149%)
-360: 820K570K (+228%)
-PS3: 710K389K (+121%)
-PSP: 294K119K (+76%)
-PS2: 203K85K (72%)

Check out the software sales chart after the break.

NPD: 114K took a Tony Hawk: Ride in November

December 10th, 2009 at 08:15pm Under Xbox 360

It looks like Activision’s hopes for Tony Hawk: Ride are falling even faster than the average Tony Hawk: Ride player. IndustryGamers reports that this month’s NPD numbers place the game at 114,000 copies sold across three platforms. Not that Activision is even paying attention to its own failure right now, distracted by the ridiculous success of its own Modern Warfare 2. This is the second disappointing month in a row for a big-box Activision game.

While we don’t have a per-platform breakdown of the disappointing sales, a forecast released before today’s NPD results estimated that just 13,000 copies sold on Xbox 360. All of this just confirms what we intuitively knew: skateboards without wheels just don’t work.

Gearbox: Borderlands fastest-selling new IP of 2009

November 17th, 2009 at 02:30pm Under Xbox 360

Gearbox has declared that Borderlands, the studio’s original RPG-FPS (”RPS”) hybrid, is the current leader in the annual undercard, the race to fastest-selling new IP of the year. While it might not make it onto a second-printing retail box, the accolade is still significant, as it implies that a new game has at least been noticed among the familiar franchises that dominate the monthly sales charts. What better hook to land a publisher when pitching a sequel?

Going by not entirely public NPD sales figures (in North America), Gearbox has determined that Borderlands had the most launch-week sales of any new IP in 2009. The only other title that could contest that would be Prototype, which enjoyed greater sales on the Xbox 360 platform (but just by 1,900 units) than did Borderlands when comparing the two games’ respective launch months (419.9k vs. 418k units). However, Prototype, which released June 9, was available at retail for 11 more days during its launch month than was Borderlands (October 20). While we don’t know total sales of either title during their launch months (both were released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC), it’s reasonable to assume that Borderlands is the fast-selling new IP (during a launch week), if not the best-selling one in combined platform sales for a launch month in 2009.

So, congratulations! But watch out for Dragon Age: Origins — we hear it’s fast, too.

EEDAR: Blame low industry sales on casual gamers

November 13th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich recently told Industry Gamers that the low sales reported by NPD in October can be attributed mainly to casual gamers. Specifically, he placed the blame on “non-traditional and casual gamers who have failed to make follow-up purchases.” Conversely, Divnich said that core game sales have been “quite healthy” throughout 2009. So, what can drive casual gamers back to the cash register? “it will take the introduction of some new style of gameplay or peripheral before we see a resurgence in the casual and non-traditional markets,” said Divnich, noting that his company expects a new DS to arrive in 2010 (presumably a next generation model, not another redesign). In addition, Divnich believes that Microsoft’s Project Natal could reinvigorate interest in motion-controlled gaming among both core and casual gamers.

Divnich also reiterated his belief that the Wii will remain on top for the rest of the year. He also thinks the PS3 could outsell the Xbox 360 over the holidays. He did note, however, that PS3 sales are “declining much faster post-price drop than the Xbx 360,” suggesting that it’s too early to claim any definite winners in the long run.

Oct. NPD: Brutal Legend sold 216k; DJ Hero sold 123k

November 13th, 2009 at 10:57am Under Xbox 360

Both Brütal Legend and DJ Hero were conspicuously absent from October’s NPD top ten. According to data given to GameSpot by NPD, DJ Hero, which was released at the end of the month, on October 27, managed 123,000 units in sales across four platforms, with the Xbox 360 version accounting for the highest number of sales (62,000 units) and, predictably, the PS2 version, the lowest (3,300 units).

Double Fine’s rocking, semi-strategy game, Brütal Legend, which debuted on Rocktober 13, totaled 216,000 units in sales across two platforms during October: 150,000 on Xbox 360 (almost enough to launch it into the monthly top ten) and 66,000 on PS3. This total fails to hit analyst Jesse Divnich’s prediction for the month. However, Divnich suggested that Brütal Legend would go on to be an attractive holiday item — something that may also be true for the bulky box with the cool turntable thingy in it.

Update: Removed reference to Brütal Legend as an Activision-published title. We know better!
