After a strong 2009, Sony plans to focus its efforts in the coming year on some new initiatives — notably the still unnamed and, with a “Spring 2010 release,” curiously under-promoted PlayStation Motion Controller, 3D games, and the PlayStation Network. In a recent GamePro interview, Sony marketing head John Koller said the company will be focusing on these “three big pillars” going forward, and detailed its plans to expand on each. “I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games … they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching,” he said of the company’s motion controller plans.
Without getting too specific, the PlayStation Network will apparently be seeing the addition of “a number of very critically demanded features” in the coming year, while the company strives to reach day-and-date release parity between UMD-based PSP games and their digital counterparts from third-party devs on PSN. He even teased the concept of “placing you as a consumer into the game physically” — an idea he called “the Holy Grail of gaming.” We get the feeling 2010 is going to be kind of a weird year, folks.

It’s been over a year since Sony America and Japan debuted video delivery services for the PlayStation Store. Today, the long-delayed feature finally makes its way to Europe. The service will launch in France, Germany, Spain and the UK today, with other countries to follow in 2010. Downloads will be available directly from the PS3 and PSP, with rentals starting from €1.99, and movie purchases starting from €7.99.
For a limited time, the PlayStation Store will be running a special promo. Anyone that purchases Angels and Demons from the newly launched service will get a free copy of The Da Vinci Code. New registrants of the PlayStation Network will also be able to get a free download of Transformers if they create an account before November 30.
“The launch of the PlayStation Network video delivery service extends our entertainment offering and provides consumers with another way to access their favorite movies, whether at home or on the go,” SCEE’s Andrew House wrote in a press release. SCEE’s Jem Alexander also shared his enthusiasm with us, saying the service will be “amazing” and that “biscuits are brilliant.”

EA announced today that the “first DLC” (that means there’ll be more, right?) for recently released Brütal Legend will be arriving November 3 and November 5 on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, respectively. Named “Tears of the Hextadon,” the two, totally not RTS maps (”Circle of Tears” and “Death’s Fjord”) will set you back 400
($5) on Xbox 360. If you’re a PS3 owner, however, the map pack will be free of charge for the first two weeks. “We love the PS3,” EA’s Brent Dady said over on PlayStation Blog, speaking on the publisher’s decision to offer the DLC for free on PSN until November 19.
Those who get the DLC on either console will also get a free in-game axe — the intimidating “Blade of Ormagöden.” We suggest you start looking for the game’s creative lead Tim Schafer, who claims in the release that he plays online “every night.” Get him Joystiq Biomass! Get him.

Yesterday, SCEA announced a partnership with Amazon.com to sell PSN codes through the online retailer. We chatted with Eric Lempel about the deal and how it came to fruition. Lempel revealed to us that the program had been in the works long before Amazon started selling XBLM codes, and said that Sony would be “looking into” offering direct access to the PlayStation Store on the web. Read on for more.
Joystiq: Is Amazon.com an exclusive retail partner with Sony, or will we see this program expand to other retailers?
Eric Lempel: Amazon offers a lot of great benefits, but we’re definitely open to exploring other retailers in the channel. There’s nothing exclusive about this. If it makes sense, and works for both sides, yeah, we’d definitely be open to exploring this with other retail partners.
Which party was responsible for getting the project rolling? Was it Sony, or was it Amazon?
We have a lot of meetings with [Amazon] on a regular basis, because they are one of our customers for all of the physical product. So, we’re talking with them all the time. I’ve been in meetings with them for years, so I can’t really say who brought this up but we’ve all been talking about this for a long time. And I will say we’ve been talking about this way before the Xbox integration as well, so it wasn’t one of these, “Hey, we’re doing this, do you guys want to do this as well?” We’ve thought about this, we’ve been talking about it. We’ve kind of had to get the right timing where all of us can do the implementation. We thought now would be a great time just in light of PSP Go being released and the surge of digital content that’s become available over the last few months.

Oh, my! Although the release of Turtles in Time and Silent Hill on PSN this week is certainly noteworthy, it’s the appearance of George Takei in PAIN that takes the cake. The original Star Trek star will be at your disposal to shoot from a canon and … seriously, why would you want to hurt George Takei? He’s awesome! The Andy Dick hurtable PAIN DLC character from a couple weeks back was a far more understandable option. Check out the rest of the update after the break.

Sony has announced an open casting call for a new reality series, created specifically for PlayStation Network, dubbed “The Tester.” Participants will run a gauntlet of elimination challenges, with the aim of outshining their fellow competitors in the fields of “mental prowess, dexterity and video game knowledge.” The winner will, of course, receive “every gamer’s dream job” and become “The Tester,” who is a tester of PlayStation games.
Those looking to put this wacky and mildly voyeuristic job interview on their resumes are encouraged to submit their details and a short video to Sony’s official website. To be considered, you must be older than 21, a resident of the United States and have an unflappable desire to tell someone that they need to tighten up the graphics on level three. The series, which will eventually comprise eight HD episodes, will debut this winter on PSN — at an unannounced price. How’s that for reality?

Capcom’s latest downloadable title, Fate/Unlimited Codes, is set to drop on the PlayStation Store on September 3. Developed by Eighting (the team behind Tatsunoko Vs Capcom), Fate/Unlimited Codes is a fighter specifically designed for the PSP Go, based on a popular Japanese anime franchise.
Originally a PlayStation 2 title in Japan in 2008, Fate/Unlimited Codes has been available for the PSP in the Far East since June, but the pseudo-3D fighter hopes to make a splash when it lands on North American and European shores next week. The story of Fate/Unlimited Codes goes like this: Seven masters and servants battle for control of a small Japanese town’s “Holy Grail,” which can grant the winner anything they wish. What would we wish for? For it to be September 3, so we can get our hands on Capcom’s latest. Oh, and a pony!

It took long enough, but it appears pre-paid PlayStation Network cards have arrived in Canada. Makinen snapped this photo of a local Canadian card that credits you 20 Canadian dollars for use on the PSN. With it, our credit card-less Canadian friends can finally start downloading games and movies onto the PS3 and PSP.
[Thanks, djpenny1!]
