It’s been over a year since Sony America and Japan debuted video delivery services for the PlayStation Store. Today, the long-delayed feature finally makes its way to Europe. The service will launch in France, Germany, Spain and the UK today, with other countries to follow in 2010. Downloads will be available directly from the PS3 and PSP, with rentals starting from €1.99, and movie purchases starting from €7.99.
For a limited time, the PlayStation Store will be running a special promo. Anyone that purchases Angels and Demons from the newly launched service will get a free copy of The Da Vinci Code. New registrants of the PlayStation Network will also be able to get a free download of Transformers if they create an account before November 30.
“The launch of the PlayStation Network video delivery service extends our entertainment offering and provides consumers with another way to access their favorite movies, whether at home or on the go,” SCEE’s Andrew House wrote in a press release. SCEE’s Jem Alexander also shared his enthusiasm with us, saying the service will be “amazing” and that “biscuits are brilliant.”

EA announced today that the “first DLC” (that means there’ll be more, right?) for recently released Brütal Legend will be arriving November 3 and November 5 on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, respectively. Named “Tears of the Hextadon,” the two, totally not RTS maps (”Circle of Tears” and “Death’s Fjord”) will set you back 400
($5) on Xbox 360. If you’re a PS3 owner, however, the map pack will be free of charge for the first two weeks. “We love the PS3,” EA’s Brent Dady said over on PlayStation Blog, speaking on the publisher’s decision to offer the DLC for free on PSN until November 19.
Those who get the DLC on either console will also get a free in-game axe — the intimidating “Blade of Ormagöden.” We suggest you start looking for the game’s creative lead Tim Schafer, who claims in the release that he plays online “every night.” Get him Joystiq Biomass! Get him.

It’s been a while since we were legitimately excited by an addition to the PSOne Classics storefront — however, now we’re waiting on bated breath for the PSN re-release of two timeless titles: Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. The pair of PlayStation platformers will say “hey-lo” to the PlayStation Store this Thursday, where they’ll be sold for $9.99 a piece.
We know we should be counting our blessings, but we’re hoping the addition of these impossibly Odd titles is just a precursor to more PS1 platformers getting ported to the PSN. In simpler, less alliterative terms, we’re gonna need someone to bring Heart of Darkness into the family of PSOne Classics. We’re gonna need someone to do that immediately.

In the second part of our interview with SCEA’s Eric Lempel, we chatted about the simultaneous release of PSP Go and PSP minis. In addition to discussing the hands-off approach Sony is taking with the pricing of minis, we talked about the possibility of the minis program moving to PS3, and eventual Mac support for the PSP’s MediaGo application.
Joystiq: Are any Sony first-party studios working on PSP minis?
Eric Lempel: Right now, to my knowledge, they’re not. That could change, again, but right now, I don’t believe any of the studios are working on minis.
What determines the pricing of PSP minis?
There are a couple of rules, or maybe there’s just one rule. They have to come in at $9.99 or under.
If someone wanted to release at $1.99, they could?
Yes, absolutely.

Yesterday, SCEA announced a partnership with Amazon.com to sell PSN codes through the online retailer. We chatted with Eric Lempel about the deal and how it came to fruition. Lempel revealed to us that the program had been in the works long before Amazon started selling XBLM codes, and said that Sony would be “looking into” offering direct access to the PlayStation Store on the web. Read on for more.
Joystiq: Is Amazon.com an exclusive retail partner with Sony, or will we see this program expand to other retailers?
Eric Lempel: Amazon offers a lot of great benefits, but we’re definitely open to exploring other retailers in the channel. There’s nothing exclusive about this. If it makes sense, and works for both sides, yeah, we’d definitely be open to exploring this with other retail partners.
Which party was responsible for getting the project rolling? Was it Sony, or was it Amazon?
We have a lot of meetings with [Amazon] on a regular basis, because they are one of our customers for all of the physical product. So, we’re talking with them all the time. I’ve been in meetings with them for years, so I can’t really say who brought this up but we’ve all been talking about this for a long time. And I will say we’ve been talking about this way before the Xbox integration as well, so it wasn’t one of these, “Hey, we’re doing this, do you guys want to do this as well?” We’ve thought about this, we’ve been talking about it. We’ve kind of had to get the right timing where all of us can do the implementation. We thought now would be a great time just in light of PSP Go being released and the surge of digital content that’s become available over the last few months.

Last Friday, a blog entry at Capcom Unity (that was mysteriously pulled) revealed the names and dates for a number of “UMD Legacy” titles for re-release on the PlayStation Store:
- October 8: Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Dark Tower
- October 15: Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max
- October 22: Capcom Puzzle World
- October 29: Maverick Hunter X
- November 5: Megaman Powered Up
This list completes the lineup of un-UMD’d games promised three months ago (and tosses in Capcom Puzzle World for good measure). While Capcom has neglected to price any of these titles, previously released Legacy games are currently $19.99 each on the PlayStation Store. Unsure of the veracity of the pulled info, we confirmed with Capcom’s Chris Kramer, who told us that the “titles are correct and the dates should be fairly accurate,” though he did admit that it’s “hard to pin down digital release dates almost until they happen.”
Still unaccounted for? Those PS1 old-timers you’ve been waiting forever to buy again: Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.

Another season of TV shows means another set of promotional episodes on the PlayStation Store. The first episodes of two new NBC dramas can be downloaded for free on your PS3 and PSP for a limited time only: Mercy and Trauma. Both shows are medical dramas: the first focuses on nurses, while the second promises to be ER … plus explosions.
Critics weren’t too kind on either program, but why take their word? Mercy will be available until 10/8 and Trauma will be available until 10/13. You can access this content by navigating to Video>TV Shows>Networks>NBC from the PlayStation Store.

As we reported earlier this month, NIS America is making several of its previously UMD-only PSP games available for download from the US PlayStation Store late tonight / early tomorrow morning to coincide with the launch of PSP Go.
For a period of one week, Blade Dancer: Lineage of Light, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, Dragoneer’s Aria, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman!, Mana Khemia: Student Alliance and Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? will be available at 50% off their normal cost — a welcome offer, given that many digital titles on the store are keeping pricing parity with their retail UMD equivalents.
NIS is also asking visitors to the PlayStation Blog whether they want to see a UMD release of Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! by means of a poll that currently has the “ayes” and “nays” running nearly neck-and-neck.

Speaking at Austin GDC, Justin Cooney from Sony Computer Entertainment spoke about the upcoming PSP minis program to a crowd of developers eager to start creating games and applications for the system. They promise an extremely fast process to get onto the PlayStation Network: no stage one or two approvals, and very light Q&A. They’re hoping to average three to five days for approvals, which contrasts with up to two weeks for normal-sized PSP games.
The minis program is also fairly limited. You can’t develop network or online features for it (goodbye multiplayer), it doesn’t support DLC, and you can’t use it to work with peripherals. Developers will also have to have their game approved by the ESRB, which costs money. You can also release your titles in all three territories, but you need to sign agreements with each territory (North America, Japan, Europe) in order to do so.
Sony is definitely taking an iPhone App Store approach to this process, and Cooney himself dropped the iPhone name a few times. We’re wondering if they’ve considered that there are over 20k games now on the App Store, and if they’ve prepared themselves for the onslaught and how they’ll be devoting a lot of time to minis approvals. So, look for PSPFart to be available for download sometime soon.

If you read the headline carefully enough, you’ll notice that there is more than one demo coming out for the upcoming PSP Half-Minute Hero. However, the first demo will be available on the PlayStation Store tomorrow. It’s quite possibly the zaniest game to hit the platform in a long time, forcing players to vanquish evil in 30 second bursts (seriously!). Hero mode is just one of four different modes hidden in the full game.
It’s hard to effectively describe the frantic gameplay through words. Thankfully, you can completely ignore our opinions and just give the demo a spin.
