ESA partners with Microsoft & Sony for STEM initiative, launches game creation competitions

November 23rd, 2009 at 01:40pm Under Xbox 360

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the game industry lobby group, today announced two new game creation contests meant to support President Obama’s STEM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math studies). A partnership between the ESA, Microsoft, Sony, the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC), and the MacArthur Foundation will help to fund and run a series of STEM-related game design competitions.

Details of the first two competitions – “Game Changers” and the less creatively titled “STEM National Video Game Competition” – are scant at the moment, though the former will involve Sony donating 1,000 PS3s and copies of LittleBigPlanet to libraries and community-based organizations in low-income districts, with plans to share the winning levels free to the gaming public. When asked, an ESA representative told Joystiq that more information would be revealed in “the coming weeks.”

Sengoku Basara rocks the vote in Japan

October 7th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

To raise awareness about its upcoming gubernatorial election, Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture is launching an ad campaign featuring Edo-era samurai Date Masamune. Oh, not the real one — the one from Capcom’s Sengoku Basara.

Through “TV ads, radio, newspapers, and transportation agencies,” the fictionalized video game version of the long-dead daimyo will encourage young residents to get out the vote … even though power and land was inherited in the real sengoku period during which the real Date lived. In addition, the websites for Shiroishi City, Kochi Prefecture, Kochi City, and Sengoku Basara will post messages encouraging tourism to the homelands of the real historical figures who inspired the game.

Why all the fuss? When the first game was released Stateside as Devil Kings, nothing really came of it; however, in Japan, the Sengoku Basara series and its associated anime have been popular enough to reignite interest in the real sengoku period among “otaku tourists.” With Capcom launching Sengoku Basara 3 in North America next year, we could be seeing Masamune’s smirking face on our own campaign posters soon enough.

Risen banned in Australia for incentivizing sex and drugs

August 11th, 2009 at 07:30pm Under Xbox 360

RPG Risen has been refused classification by Australia’s OFLC, meaning it can’t be sold at retail on the continent. Kotaku was informed by the game’s Aussie distributor that the board was concerned by “sexual activity and drug use related to incentives or rewards.” Ignore the fact that both of those concepts are directly related to teaching children how to succeed in business.

Why are we talking about children? Well, it’s because Australia only rates games that are appropriate for children 15-years-old and younger. The US’s ESRB summary of Risen notes that sex is implied but never depicted, while “wood reefer” can be bought, sold and used. That sounds a lot like high school.

Other Xbox 360s Palin comparison to this one, up for $1.1 million

August 6th, 2009 at 12:24pm Under Xbox 360

Former presidential candidate … vice-presidential, really? Could have fooled us. Anyway, former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin saw fit to grant a man her autograph on an Xbox 360 and now he’s selling it on eBay for …

One billion dollars
(dramatic music)

No, but the actual figure is almost as ludicrous at $1.1 million. And for that price, you’re not even getting an Elite, just a plain ol’ Pro — which may be a collector’s item soon anyways. Perhaps, if the gentleman sells the item, he’ll be a very supportive donor to Palin’s expected 2012 presidential bid. Yes he can.
