The disc drive out back may be a bit precariously placed, but ‘Hailrazer”’s portable “NCube” reeks of everything we’d want in a handheld version of the last-gen Nintendo console (except for wireless multiplayer, of course). Engadget spotted the 90-hour-in-the-making portable GameCube over on – surprise, surprise! – the Ben Heck forums. A breakdown of the construction process can be found just after the break in video form, though you may want to set up the drool tray now before proceeding.
All set? Alright, now go ahead.

The identity of the PSP role-playing game which Disgaea developer Nippon Ichi teased in July has been revealed. Appropriately titled Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku (which translates to Absolute Hero Modding Project), the game pits players up against randomly generated dungeons, where they can search for equipment with which to fully customize their character, or battle enemies in order to level up their characters forever.
The game has a 2010 launch window for Japan, but Ichi hasn’t mentioned anything about a North American release. That’s a shame — based on these screenshots over at Dengeki, it looks right up our isometric alley.

While it doesn’t carry the same cachet as “Election Day” or “Chinese Leftovers Day,” Zune HD Day is still very much a real thing. With today’s launch of Microsoft’s pretty-cool-but-still-not-a-phone media player comes final confirmation that the Zune HD will support games. Buried in the device’s launch press release is the following line: “Later this year, Zune plans to release … fun 3-D games such as Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Vans Sk8: Pool Service and Audiosurf Tilt.”
Of course, three games does not a platform make and, while Apple is busy touting the availability of 21,178 games in the iPhone App Store, Microsoft is launching the Zune HD with a far less … robust marketplace. Even at the launch of Apple’s App Store, over a third of the 500 programs available were games; today, it’s closer to half.
Unfortunately, the Zune HD isn’t competing with the pre-App Store iPhone or iPod Touch, so when Zune marketing manager Brian Seitz tells the Seattle Times that it’s “hard to say right now” if the “sometimes connected” Zune HD will be opened up to third-party app development, it’s difficult to hide our disappointment. Game development on the Zune HD is happening on a “case-by-case” and not a “come one, come all” basis, Seitz says.
So, what he’s saying is you shouldn’t expect to see anywhere near 21k games (regardless of quality) and you can also write off seeing the Zune HD popping up on the list of IGF Mobile nominees next year. As a gaming platform, even a casual gaming platform, will this be enough to compete against the iPod Touch or even the PSP Go? We’ll find out “in November” when these games are finally available.

Nintendo’s DSiWare platform is set to become a bit more combustible later this fall — according to AndriaSang, the Japanese release list in the latest edition of Famitsu reveals an October launch for Itsudemo Bomberman (which translates to Bomberman Anytime) on the handheld’s download service. The magazine also lists a price of 500 DSi Points ($5) for the portable title.
Hudson hasn’t taken the trouble of actually announcing Itsudemo Bomberman yet — regardless, we’ve contacted them to see what, if any, details we can surmise about the game.
[Thanks, Fernando.]

It seems that reports from way back in January of this year on the Zune HD were true — the upcoming handheld from Microsoft will in fact feature some form of handheld gaming when it releases on September 15. At least that’s what we can glean from a recent advertisement for the OLED-laden iPod Touch competitor, hinting at a gaming feature (and showing a tiny snippet of a racing game).
We’ve embedded the video after the break, originally found by Zunited, but will presumably have to wait until at least Monday to hear more about the Zune HD’s gaming features (though we’ve asked Microsoft for comment either way). Considering the fact that the Zune Marketplace is coming to Xbox 360, we’ll be holding fast hope for a Microsoft version of PSP’s Minis at some point in the near future.

Though it’s been quite some time since we last heard anything about a portable gaming device from Microsoft, corporate VP Shane Kim recently reconfirmed to Kikizo that the company is still very interested in the idea. “We’re building a service in Live that will… will extend to other platforms … no question about it,” Kim told them in an interview earlier this week.
He stresses that, with development for Project Natal underway, Microsoft isn’t exactly ponying up for extra resources to make portable Xbox gaming a reality. “If we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like … Project Natal.” Surprisingly, Kim even touches on the always touchy (and often not even mentioned) Live Anywhere initiative, saying, “We talked about Live Anywhere a few years ago … Live is the connective tissue.” From the sounds of things, though Microsoft may very well be thinking about the idea of a gaming handheld in the future, it’s not exactly right around the corner.
