Sony’s Koller calls ‘motion control, 3D gaming, PSN’ focal points of 2010

December 16th, 2009 at 01:45pm Under PSP

After a strong 2009, Sony plans to focus its efforts in the coming year on some new initiatives — notably the still unnamed and, with a “Spring 2010 release,” curiously under-promoted PlayStation Motion Controller, 3D games, and the PlayStation Network. In a recent GamePro interview, Sony marketing head John Koller said the company will be focusing on these “three big pillars” going forward, and detailed its plans to expand on each. “I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games … they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching,” he said of the company’s motion controller plans.

Without getting too specific, the PlayStation Network will apparently be seeing the addition of “a number of very critically demanded features” in the coming year, while the company strives to reach day-and-date release parity between UMD-based PSP games and their digital counterparts from third-party devs on PSN. He even teased the concept of “placing you as a consumer into the game physically” — an idea he called “the Holy Grail of gaming.” We get the feeling 2010 is going to be kind of a weird year, folks.

JBO: Joystiq Box Office, December 7 – December 11, plus Joyswag!

December 11th, 2009 at 10:30pm Under Xbox 360

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.

With the holidays in mind, we’re going to be giving away … wait for it … MOVIES with each Joystiq Box Office post on Friday from today through January 1! Simply leave a comment below telling us what you’ll be watching on your Xbox, PS3, PC, PSP, DS, OMG or whatever, and we’ll pick two winners at random each week to receive a nifty prize. This week we’ll be giving away one copy of Disney/Pixar’s amazing Up and one copy of the romantic comedy The Ugly Truth. Now before you cringe in terror over a Katherine Heigl / Gerard Butler romcom, consider this: It’ll make your movie collection look sensitive. Both movies come with an additional digital copy that you can stick on your computer, your PSP, your iPod, what have you. Read the complete rules at the end of this post, and good luck!

Recommendation of the Week:

The Mel Brooks Collection (Blu-ray, $139.99 suggested retail)
I can’t recommend this set highly enough. First of all, it includes nine Mel Brooks films: Twelve Chairs, To Be Or Not To Be, Silent Movie, History of the World: Part 1, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, many of which are making their Blu-ray debut. Second, it includes a ton of extra features: just the Young Frankenstein disc alone is loaded with tons of fun stuff, including a “Blücher Button” for instant horse whinnying sounds. Third, it’s packaged in a long case containing an artbook about all about Mel Brooks and his movies called “All About Mel Brooks.” Fourth, it’s Mel Brooks, and you need a few laughs in high definition. Amazon has this right now for $92.99, whittling it down to almost ten bucks a movie. You won’t be sorry.

Read on for the rest of the recommendations, and as usual, we’ll see you at the popcorn sta — well, actually, we won’t see you at all. But you catch our drift. Plus, be sure to tell us what you’ll be watching, or what you’ve seen recently that bowled you over.

Brutal Legend DLC, Hammer of Infinite Fate, releases next week

December 9th, 2009 at 10:02am Under PS3

Brütal Legend Logo Big

Brütal Legend, Double Fine’s heavy metal-inspired action adventure game, will receive its second piece of downloadable content (DLC) next week, in the form of the Hammer of Infinity Fate pack, bringing with it a host of customisation options and gameplay additions.

This new Brütal Legend DLC will bring with it the ability to upgrade protagonist Eddie Riggs with three new outfits, including ‘Mountain Man,’ ‘Black Metal’ and ‘Zaulia Threads,’ and seven more back patches with which to customise yourself.

Brütal Legend Screenshot 9

The DLC pack will also include four new paint jobs for Eddie’s hotrod, The Deuce, and four more upgrades for the car, including the ‘Oculus of the Lost’ (“an all-seeing GPS for the world”) and the ‘Eye of Sorrow’ (“a weapon that harness the power of the Sea of Black Tears and launches black projectiles of doom at enemies”), as well as The Disgorger and Coiling Maw (which probably do what the names imply).

Nine new Achievements/Trophies will also be up for the winning with the Hammer of Infinite Fate, while Mount Rockmore will feature the addition of six more heads to purchase and unlock for players to customise their landscape, with the visages of Rima, Razputin, Dadbat, Hunter, Kage the Kannonier and Tim Schafer available to carve into the mountain.

Brütal Legend Screenshot 5

President of Double Fine Productions, Tim Schafer said of the Hammer of Infinite Fate DLC for Brütal Legend: “I’m excited about the beard, or course, and the new achievements and trophies. But the thing I really can’t wait to get my hands on is that Oculus of the Lost. Using it to find the last Bound Serpent isn’t cheating, because it looks so cool on my car.”

This new Brütal Legend DLC, Hammer of Infinite Fate, releases on December 17th next week on Xbox 360 (available for 440 MS Points through Xbox LIVE) and PS3 (available for $4.99 through the PlayStation Network).

El33tonline really enjoyed the time spent with Brütal Legend, so be sure to read our review and browse through our previous coverage to find out all about the game.

PS3 firmware 3.15 announced, PSP minis to be playable on PS3

December 8th, 2009 at 11:36am Under PS3+ PSP

PS3 and PSP Minis

The next firmware update for the PS3, version 3.15, will be coming “very soon,” according to a recent post up on the European PlayStation Blog, and will include the ability to play PSP minis via your PS3, as well as a facility to transfer your current PS3 data to another entirely different PS3 console. From the post:

“We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP.

“This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.”

The post also assures us that even if we’ve already bought a PSP mini game, we’ll still be able to play it through our PS3s when the firmware update hits.

PS3 Slim

As for the data transfer ability to become available with system update 3.15, the blog post notes:

“This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content.

“Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

“The process is really simple

  • Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on and connect them with a LAN cable; PS3 (A) should be connected to the TV
  • On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings menu and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
  • Follow the instructions on-screen and transfer data
  • After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen, and then connect PS3 (B) to the TV to view the XMB
  • If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system”

Great! Look forward to all of this functionality real soon (next week, December 17th).

Modern Warfare 2 update 1.06 fixes Javelin glitch, infinite care packages, geography exploits

December 7th, 2009 at 04:30pm Under Xbox 360

If amazingly fast and explosive men have been the bane of your existence in Modern Warfare 2 as of late, then know that Activision’s go-to guy, Robert “fourzerotwo” Bowling, has got the hot scoops on a patch in the works to address the despised Javelin glitch. Version 1.06 of the game will not only do away with that awful bit of frustration, but will also address two other notable exploits in the multiplayer experience:

  • Fixes the Javelin glitch (thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster!)
  • Fixes unlimited care packages glitch
  • Fixes areas where players could exploit geography (e.g. hide inside rocks in Afghan)

Bowling says the patch is currently in the hands of Microsoft for certification on Xbox 360 and presumably in Sony’s for PS3 certification. We’ve contacted Bowling for more info and will update the post when we hear back.

Bayonetta Box Art

The demo weighs in at 769 MB on Xbox LIVE and 1.63 GB on PSN, and is said to be a game of “100% pure, unadulterated, climatic action.”

“With powers far beyond the comprehension of mere mortals, our heroine Bayonetta fights countless enemies, evil forces and giant foes in brutal yet graceful ways. Being bad never felt so good…”
