Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey launch copies to include bonus soundtrack

December 15th, 2009 at 09:05pm Under Wii / Nintendo

At some point, people are going to get spoiled by Atlus’s (coincidentally named) “Atlus Spoils” program, in which the company includes some kind of bonus item with pretty much every game it releases. When the publisher doesn’t release a game with an artbook or soundtrack or figurine or something, somebody out there is going to be irritated to buy just a game.

That won’t happen with Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, though. Atlus announced today that every launch copy of the first-person RPG will include a soundtrack disc. You’ll have to wait a bit longer to get that launch copy: the publisher also announced that the release date has moved from the March 10 date found on Nintendo’s Q1 schedule to March 23.

Spec Ops: The Line not dusting up until Nov. 2010 at earliest

December 14th, 2009 at 05:31pm Under Xbox 360

Though the Bjork-filled trailer for Spec Ops: The Line may have left you eager to start shooting up a sandy Dubai, we have to recommend that you save at least some anticipation for late next year. According to publisher Take-Two, the Yager-developed shooter isn’t due until the 2011 fiscal year, which kicks off on Nov. 1 of 2010.

Yes, it’s a long way off, but don’t get depressed! Your friends at Joystiq have a wonderful way of filling your quota for desert-based e-murder in the interim: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. With Game of the Year list time just around the corner, has there ever been a better moment to revisit the most points-laden diamond skull hunt of the year? We think not.

Square Enix plans ‘0 Day Attack on Earth’ for Dec. 23

December 14th, 2009 at 05:00pm Under Xbox 360

Square Enix is swooping in like some kind of Tetsuya Nomura-designed Santa Claus and delivering the world what it wants — nay, needs — just in time for the hap-hap-happiest time of the year: a twin-stick shooter for Xbox Live Arcade. Its been announced via the game’s official Twitter feed that 0 Day Attack in Earth will invade the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 23.

Like Sony’s The Last Guy, 0 Day Attack on Earth uses satellite photography for its real-world city battle zones — only players are tooling around high above the ground blasting ginormous alien invaders with a friend, or just solo. We went hands-in with the game at TGS 2009 and found it to be … well, the verdict’s still out of this world.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC ‘The Passing’ to feature L4D1 cast

December 14th, 2009 at 04:00pm Under Xbox 360

Not content with unleashing a full-blown zombie apocalypse, Valve has come up with the second most socially awkward event imaginable: inviting characters from the original Left 4 Dead to hang out in the sequel’s first DLC campaign. Bill, Louis, Zoey and Francis will meet with the stars of Left 4 Dead 2 in “The Passing,” which Valve VP of marketing Doug Lombardi calls “the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign.” It’s targeted for release in early 2010 on Xbox 360 and PC.

In addition to a co-op campaign (set in rural Georgia) and a new “co-operative challenge mode of play,” The Passing will offer new content for Survival, Versus and Scavenge modes. Playing as the L4D2 cast, you can also expect to encounter a new melee weapon, firearm and “uncommon common” zombie.

We can’t wait to meet up with last year’s survivors again … oh, assuming they really are still survivors.

Pink and blue Wiimotes coming Valentine’s Day

December 14th, 2009 at 03:46pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Along with its many software announcements, Nintendo of America made one small hardware announcement this morning. The blue and pink Wii Remotes, first announced for Japan in October, are on the way to North America on February 14. Unlike the awesome black Wiimote, neither the included MotionPlus peripheral nor the Wiimote jacket will be in a matching color.

Still, as Nintendo reminds us, this is your first chance to have a different-color Wiimote for each of four players. Unless you’ve already solved that “problem” by sticking one of your friends with the (perhaps undeserved) stigma of being Nyko Wand Guy.

FYI: WarioWare DIY does it on DS in March

December 14th, 2009 at 11:30am Under Wii / Nintendo

One of Nintendo’s most exciting announcements from E3 was the localization of WarioWare DIY, a DS app that lets players create their own WarioWare games, with custom graphics, sound, and gameplay. Nintendo didn’t happen to offer a date during the thrilling E3 presentation, and it’s said nothing at all about what should be a major part of the publisher’s DS lineup — until today.

In its Q1 schedule, Nintendo provided a date of March 28. You’re not buying anything in March, right? The company also offered a Q1 date for WarioWare DIY Showcase, the WiiWare game through which WarioWare DIY games can be uploaded and played on a big screen.

Amazon listing for Pokemon remakes includes March 14 release date, Pokewalker accessory

December 13th, 2009 at 10:00pm Under DS

Though Japan has been enjoying the adorable bounties of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver for months now, us poor westerners still don’t know when to expect the games on our store shelves, or whether they’ll include the Pokéwalker accessory which allows you to take one of your encapsulated soldiers out for a discreet night on the town. Fortunately, if the games’ Amazon listings are on the money, both these Unown pieces of info have been divulged: According to the listings, they’re coming March 14, along with the Poke Ball-shaped peripheral.

The latter information actually comes from the games’ supposed box art, which we’ve posted above. We’ve contacted Nintendo to find out if the Amazon listing is authentic. If it’s not, we’re going to give them the most guilt-inspiring sad puppy face anyone’s ever seen. It will be absolutely brutal.

GameStop weekly claims UFC Undisputed 2010 ‘coming May 25′

December 12th, 2009 at 05:00pm Under Xbox 360

The Spike VGAs this evening may very well reveal the first gameplay of upcoming MMA-er UFC Undisputed 2010, but the most recent GameStop weekly is dropping release date bombs on us well before tonight’s festivities kickoff. According to the ad, the game will be grappling onto store shelves on May 25 and, as you might imagine, you’re welcome to “pre-order now!”

While we’re normally reticent to trust release dates from retailers as absolute truth, the prominence of this information among a weekly advertisement — and the fact that the game is getting “World Premiere” treatment on tonight’s award show — puts some confidence in our normally skeptical perception of situations like this. Either way, we’re likely to confirm this report’s veracity when the VGAs roll this evening.

[Thanks Erik!]

Prepare for takeoff with this Sky Crawlers trailer

December 10th, 2009 at 06:15pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Do you like airplanes? Do you like anime stereotypes? Then The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is what you’ve been waiting for! XSEED released the above trailer, featuring lots of awesome planes, and lots of inexplicably young people flying them. Well, not inexplicably — though the details may constitute a spoiler, there is a really weird explanation for everyone’s age. Beyond “it’s anime.”

The Sky Crawlers will be one of the first Wii releases of 2010 — it’s due out on January 5.

SNK announces Metal Slug XX, three more for XBLA in Japan

December 7th, 2009 at 10:55am Under Xbox 360

There’s good news and bad news about Metal Slug 7 on Xbox Live Arcade. The bad news is that we’re pretty sure it’s not coming out. The good news is that Metal Slug XX, the upgraded, multiplayer-capable PSP remix of the DS game, is replacing it in SNK’s 2010 lineup. SNK also announced XBLA ports of two of its fighting games: King of Fighters 2002 Ultimate Match and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. All three will join the weird King of Fighters shooting game, The King of Fighters Sky Stage, on XBLA in spring 2010.

These games have, so far, been announced only for Japan, but we are sure SNK will release them all worldwide — if only because it would be a waste of effort to develop an XBLA title just for the few people in Japan who would buy it.

[Thanks, sacra!]
