GameStop weekly claims UFC Undisputed 2010 ‘coming May 25′

December 12th, 2009 at 05:00pm Under Xbox 360

The Spike VGAs this evening may very well reveal the first gameplay of upcoming MMA-er UFC Undisputed 2010, but the most recent GameStop weekly is dropping release date bombs on us well before tonight’s festivities kickoff. According to the ad, the game will be grappling onto store shelves on May 25 and, as you might imagine, you’re welcome to “pre-order now!”

While we’re normally reticent to trust release dates from retailers as absolute truth, the prominence of this information among a weekly advertisement — and the fact that the game is getting “World Premiere” treatment on tonight’s award show — puts some confidence in our normally skeptical perception of situations like this. Either way, we’re likely to confirm this report’s veracity when the VGAs roll this evening.

[Thanks Erik!]

GameFly begins selling new games

November 18th, 2009 at 08:00pm Under Xbox 360

GameFly, the online game rental service …. wait, that’s hardly accurate anymore, let’s start over: GameFly, the media company and rental service entity, is now selling new games on its website, including large items like DJ Hero and Tony Hawk Ride. Those expecting to discover the amazing discounts normally found with the service’s used games will be disappointed to note that the new games are full retail price and include shipping costs and applicable taxes.

Example for Massachusetts:

  • A new copy of New Super Marios Bros Wii: $50 for the game + $3 tax + $5 for standard shipping = $58
  • The “keep it” price for a member who’s been with the service over a year: $39 + $3 tax + no shipping cost = $42 (members also receive a $5 coupon every quarter, which would make it $37)

The “new” store isn’t a revelation in retail, but perhaps it’ll make more sense later on. GameFly still has some of the best deals in used games we’ve seen.

[Thanks, Chris S.]

Wal-Mart offering $100 gift card with purchase of Xbox 360 Arcade

November 4th, 2009 at 02:15pm Under Xbox 360

Black Friday isn’t the only day in November where prices are eviscerated and sweet deals are distributed like confetti at a Flaming Lips concert. Wal-Mart has begun posting ads for a batch of sales being offered this coming Saturday morning — one of which will be particularly intriguing to the prospective holiday console buyers among you. While supplies last (and we assume they won’t last long), anyone who purchases a $199 Xbox 360 Arcade bundle will receive a $100 gift card to boot.

A free Benjamin’s worth of Wal-Mart products? That’s enough to buy a couple of games for your new system! And it’s only $35 short of the price of an Xbox 360 120GB hard drive! Or, you could buy two Xbox 360 Arcade bundles, and then have enough in gift card money to get a third one — plus another $100 gift card — for free! It seems we’ve beaten the system, as it were. Wal-Mart, consider yourself outfoxed.

PAL PSA: Black Wii bundle now available for pre-order, discounted in UK

October 27th, 2009 at 01:02pm Under Wii / Nintendo

We’ve got some welcome news for European readers who somehow don’t already own a Wii — or for those of you who already have one, but just can’t resist the temptation of the new black model. Amazon.uk has opened pre-orders for the new Wii Sports Resort bundle, which includes a Wiimote, a Nunchuk and a MotionPlus all dressed in black, along with both Wii Sports games. The bundle will ship on November 6 and is available on additional Amazon branches, as well; though the release dates for other European territories is November 20.

The UK pre-order price is even discounted a bit to £164.99 (roughly $270) — the same bundle in boring old white normally retails for £179.99. (The black and white bundles are priced the same, at €209.99, elsewhere in Europe.) The white bundle, however, includes your choice of two additional games — a small sacrifice for that spooky black coating, we say.

As for you importers, we suppose this could be the ideal time to pursue a PAL model, if you simply can’t wait for the black system to be announced for North America. Then again, in doing so, you’ll also have to import all of your games. Patience.

Muramasa publisher: UK retailers avoiding original IP

October 22nd, 2009 at 01:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Rising Star Games, the European publishing partner of Marvelous Entertainment, is speaking out against UK retailers declining to stock Muramasa: The Demon Blade, which comes out November 13th in the region. COO Martin DeFries told MCV in an open letter, “Here in the UK, the game will not be available to buy in the majority of games retail outlets.”

He claims that the issue is not with the game itself, but retailers’ over-reliance on safer, existing intellectual property. “If it is not first-party, a sequel or supported by a multi-million pound advertising spend, they are just not interested.” Defries lamented that Muramasa could find its way into stores — when it’s traded in.

Defries pondered in his letter whether the seemingly growing emphasis on franchises represents a “dumbing-down of the medium” that results in consumers having “little or no exposure to a rich and different gaming experience.” Of course, retailers (and publishers) have preferred the sure thing for as long as there have been sequels, but actually not being able to market your game, especially one as interesting as Muramasa, seems especially frustrating.

Retailers list Modern Warfare 2 bundle for November 10 [update]

October 18th, 2009 at 09:00pm Under Xbox 360

Update: A Microsoft representative has contacted us to say that the bundle will be shipping on November 10. As the bundle includes a retail copy of the game, Microsoft is unable to allow these to ship any earlier, meaning those who pre-ordered from the sites mentioned below will likely be waiting a few days before their bundle arrives. Sorry, folks!

We can’t say that we were exactly taken aback to find out a couple of online retailers are listing the upcoming Modern Warfare 2-paired 250GB Xbox 360 launch as November 10, the same day the game arrives at retailers nationwide. An eagle-eyed reader at Joystiq sister site Engadget spotted the bundle at both Amazon and Costco (GameStop also has the Nov. 10 ship date listed), where the details re-confirm the bundle’s lack of a component cable (for shame!). We’ve contacted Activision to make sure we’re not being led astray, but it’d be hard to expect those willing to shell out the 399 clams for the bundle to have to wait to get their fool-shootin‘ on.

Canadians can enter the Borderlands for $40

October 17th, 2009 at 12:30pm Under PC+ Xbox 360

Much like Batman: Arkham Asylum’s sale price during its initial release, Canadian retailers are giving players a break with the upcoming shooter Borderlands. For a limited time, Futureshop, Walmart and Best Buy are offering the Gearbox title for the discounted price of $39.96 on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Borderlands hits stores on October 20, giving Canadians plenty of time to dig out of their snow covered homes.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Retail gets PSN ‘Game Cards’ in NA, PSN vouchers in the UK

October 1st, 2009 at 11:00pm Under PSP

click to embiggen

With the launch of Sony’s PSP Go this week, the first download-only gaming device from a major console developer has finally arrived on the market. Given the profitability of the used games market and brick-and-mortar’s relative stronghold on game sales, we asked Sony of America (SCEA) and Sony of Europe (SCEE) how they’re going to get download-only games onto retailer shelves. SCEA’s answer: PlayStation Network Game Cards.

According to an SCEA rep, 10 titles (all of which can be found after the break) will be available “in North America at select retailers” and should be available as of today. Unfortunately for retailers across the pond, no such luck — at very least in the UK. An SCEE rep told Joystiq, “We don’t have any plans for vouchers/gift cards like this … at the moment we are only selling the PSN vouchers of £20 and £50 for the UK,” though that isn’t to say PSN Game Cards will never arrive on European shores.

At least for now it seems that SCEA will be keeping a foothold in retail with its download-only titles (and even some UMD-based titles now available as downloads) through these game vouchers. UK retailers … well … at least people will be coming in for the PSP-3000, right?

Splinter Cell Conviction Collector’s Edition sneaks into Australian retailer site

October 1st, 2009 at 04:26pm Under Xbox 360

Australians with a burnin’ love for Sam Fisher will be glad to hear that Splinter Cell Conviction has a Collector’s Edition with bonus content coming next February when the game ships in their country. According to the product’s listing on JB HiFi, $119 AUD ($104.42 USD) nets you a “Sam Fisher figurine” and “other exclusive content.”

Though GameStop Australia doesn’t have the listing and picture you see above, it does share the same pre-order bonus detailed by JB HiFi. For plunking down your dollars early, you’ll receive extras ranging from a “scratch card to unlock unique in-game content” to a download code for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Both Australian listings also say the Chaos Theory download will come from “Xbox Live Arcade,” though that could simply be poor phrasing for the “Games on Demand” offering.

We contacted Ubisoft Montreal who told us the company has “no official announcement” for North America at this time (our question about Chaos Theory was unanswered as of publishing). We’ll assuredly find out more soon, as the game’s February 2010 release date isn’t so far away.
