We’re always happy to see gaming encroaching on the rest of the world, a sign that it’s becoming more culturally accepted and mainstream, but this example is so nerdy, it might actually be a step in the other direction. What you see on the right there is the classic NES Mario sprite, recreated in specifically-engineered bacteria by the nanobiology laboratories at the University of Osaka, Japan.
We love the idea of gaming’s leading man being transformed this way, we can’t help but think how great it would have been if Team Osaka could have achieved the same effect with fungus. … You know, because the Mushroom Kin — oh, never mind.

Though we just found out about Mega Man 10, we won’t have to wait long at all before we can try it. Nintendo’s new Q1 schedule gives a March 2010 date for the WiiWare run-and-gun — just two months after Capcom starts releasing Phoenix Wright ports. What a wonderful time to have an Internet-connected Wii and enjoy Capcom products.
With the release so close, we expect more information to come out soon, starting with character art for all the bosses and the mysterious third character. We currently only know of the delightful Sheep Man and Commando Man.

As part of its relaunch, Japanese publisher Sunsoft announced that it has purchased the rights to the entire 100-plus game library of Nihon Telenet. Even if you’re not familiar with the name, you probably remember the games (most of which were published by Renovation) and their (at the time) exotic-looking anime-style covers. Telenet was the creator of the Valis series, along with action titles like El Viento, shmups like Sol-Deace and Gaiares, and the Cosmic Fantasy RPG series.
Sunsoft will begin releasing classics from the library on the Wii Virtual Console and other services — and then it will start producing remakes and new installments. This could finally be our chance for that non-pornographic Valis sequel we’ve been waiting for!
Gaijinworks – the new company started by Working Designs’ Victor Ireland – has been working with Sunsoft on the company’s relaunch and is named as instrumental in this deal. Working Designs’ history with Telenet goes back to 1992, when the company agreed to publish Telenet’s Cosmic Fantasy 2.

Get your weapons ready! The latest issue of Nintendo Power features some mega news — specifically, the upcoming release of Mega Man 10 on WiiWare.
The new installment, like the brilliant Mega Man 9, uses an NES-style aesthetic, and features wacky new bosses like Sheep Man. Sheep Man! Proto Man returns as a playable character (this time immediately, and not as time-delayed DLC), along with a third mystery character! The extra character’s identity: just one of the details, like the release date or whether or not it’s on other platforms, that we’re just going to have to wait to find out.
An image in the writeup also reveals an Easy Mode for the game, which we can imagine being welcome for a lot of people not accustomed to the uniquely painful experience of trying to complete an NES Mega Man title.

French indie dev Golgoth Studio announced today via its Twitter feed that it has become a licensed Wii and DS developer. The company came out swinging like a giant ape — an ape named Toki to be exact — back in October. While its HD remake of the Data East classic Toki has been confirmed for Xbox Live Arcade, the five-person team also has preparing a similar retooling of Joe and Mac: Caveman Ninja underway for an undisclosed platform.
Given this latest news, the game could appear for WiiWare (and/or DSiWare) or, of course, neither. Golgoth is asking its growing list of followers to let it know what other retro classics they’d like to see “remixed,” so it’s altogether possible that Nintendo platforms will see some results from the, er … results of the informal survey. Let’s hear your ideas in comment, but don’t forget to submit ‘em to Golgoth at its official forums.

The return of Cody and Guy to Street Fighter isn’t the only Final Fight news this week. Capcom has announced Final Fight Double Impact for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, featuring not just the arcade version of the Metro City brawler, but Magic Sword as well!
Final Fight Double Impact, as the collection is titled, will feature optional graphical filters and a visual mode that makes the games appear as if they’re being played on an arcade machine. Most importantly, both games will have drop-in online co-op. Capcom hasn’t priced the collection yet, but there’s no way the company will charge more than we’ve already put into Magic Sword machines over the years.

Golgoth Studio, the French developer behind the extraordinarily unlikely HD remake of TAD Corporation’s Toki, isn’t planning to stop bringing back things you might not have even known existed. During the hunt for Toki rights, Golgoth got in touch with G-Mode, who owns most of Data East’s IP, and who offered the developer the license for a Data East property.
“I can’t really say the name of the game right now,” Anthony De Sa Ferreira told Gamasutra. “We only have the new design of the principal characters. To give a little hint about this license, it’s a co-op platformer game. But I can’t say more yet.” Our guess for that co-op Data East platformer: Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja. A less likely guess: Spinmaster.
Finding the Toki license, De Sa Ferreira said, was “like an RPG,” with most of the companies involved with Toki now gone and the rights to those companies’ works spread among multiple buyers. We didn’t even know that Data East had been involved with Toki, much less that it was among the properties purchased by G-Mode.

Wait! Come back! The motion controls sound okay! We know that you’re already groaning about the potential ruin of an NES classic with unwarranted waggle, but according to 1UP’s preview of Excitebike: World Rally, the limited Wiimote motion sensing added to the traditional Excitebike control scheme actually improves the game.
You still move with the D-pad and accelerate with a button, but you can now tilt the Wiimote to lean your rider and “affect the pitch of your bike.” “Jumping was always the trickiest part of Excitebike,” 1UP’s Jeremy Parish notes, “and the analog smoothness of the motion controls makes it intuitive — it became second nature before the end of the first track.”
We’re curious enough about this sensible-sounding innovation that we’ll delay throwing our controllers down in disgust. For now.

If a consumer survey sent over to us by a tipster is to be believed, Microsoft is looking to bring a virtual Avatar arcade to the Xbox 360. Some of the potential names listed in the survey are “Game Room,” “RetroCade,” “Tower of ROM,” and “Classics LIVE.” Yeah, we’re partial to “Tower of ROM” also.
If the proposed service sounds familiar, that’s because it’s nearly identical to PlayStation Home’s arcade spaces – like Namco’s virtual arcade – just replace the dead-eyed dopplegangers of Home with the scrunchable avatars of Xbox 360. The second survey question sent to us asks, “Which of the following names would most compel you to purchase the product?” indicating that the “Tower of ROM” might not be a free space but could instead have a fee associated with it.
While the survey doesn’t give us much more to go on (besides a sinking feeling that we’re not interested), we thought we’d ask you, Joystiq Biomass, to weigh in on the product’s name. Let the fat cats in Redmond know what you think!

With the recent release of Metroid Prime Trilogy, it was easy to presume that the Prime series of Metroid games had received a final nail hammered into its coffin. According to a recent interview with Kotaku though, it appears the series’ producer isn’t quite done. In response to a question regarding multiplayer in the series, Kensuke Tanabe said:
“As all I take part in is the Prime series, I am not capable of commenting on the whole Metroid series. But we will keep considering multiplayer for the Prime series. For instance, I think I can come up with some unique ideas using the Morph Ball, which is a specific skill of Samus’.”
Though the series got a spinoff for the DS in Metroid Prime Hunters, and it’s possible Tanabe is speaking about future Prime titles for Nintendo’s handheld system, hearing about more Prime games in any capacity is intriguing news. While Team Ninja is busy working on Metroid: Other M, it’s possible that Prime series dev Retro Studios could be working on the future of its brand of Metroid. Don”t just take it from us, take it from Retro Studios prez and CEO Michael Kelbaugh who said so himself!
