In The Last Resort, Wallace and Gromit return in the second of four episodes detailing their latest Grand Adventures. Although I am stating the obvious, Episode 2 follows on from Episode 1, but it is not strictly essential to have played Episode 1 in order to fully enjoy the experience of Episode 2 (see, there was some motive to my madness in stating the obvious!). In fact, I don’t even recall a single reference back to Episode 1.

These days it seems that no developer can release a sequel without some sort of outcry from the original’s fans. There is always a fine line between releasing a product that is too familiar to the old one, or too different to be called a sequel. Overstep this line either way and the fans will have online petitions and rage infested forum posts up in no time. Just look at Modern Warfare 2 and the PC community.

Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) was no exception. The fans of the first game felt cheated since the day the sequel was announced. They feared it would kill the original community and the developer would abandon any promised add-on packs. They even had dignitaries visit Valve to check up on progress and then declared that their concerns have been put to rest. This caused other members of the community to shout foul play and bribery. Let me state for the record that Left 4 Dead 2 is a worthy sequel, with enough brilliant new content to warrant a full release, and it is totally awesome! And that all boycotters are crybabies.

Earlier this year Take 2 released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS to great critical acclaim but lackluster sales. And so GTA comes back to the PSP, its handheld home, in the form of Chinatown Wars PSP – an upscaled port of the DS game. It’s not different enough an experience from the DS one that I can recommend buying it as well as that one, but for those who missed it I can recommend Chinatown Wars on the PSP with the same qualifications as before: this is a morally bankrupt game in which you take on the role of a hired thug doing any and every crime you can think of. But it’s also fun.

Beaterator is not so much a game as it is an electronic music-creation tool complete with loops and samples from Timbaland himself. As such, there is very little to compare it to, especially on handhelds, making it hard to review. If the criterion used to judge it is purely the power of it as an “instrument” then it is a very impressive piece of software. If the criterion used is just how much fun there is to be had with it for a casual music tinkerer then it doesn’t quite match up to the Korg DS-10 on the Nintendo DS – simply because while it is more powerful, it is also more difficult to create new music with Beaterator than with the Korg simulator.

Dead Space: Extraction may at first glance seem to be another average entry in the survival horror genre, but a few innovations ensure that given a bit of time it will soon engross you and may even deliver a few scares along the way.
Let’s start with a little background on the game. Extraction was developed by Visceral Games, the same studio that worked on the 2008 original Dead Space. It is a prequel that allows gamers to fill in the gaps of the events leading up to Isaac Clarke’s mission on the USG Ishimura from that original.

GTA: Episodes from Liberty City is a standalone expansion for Grand Theft Auto IV, which was until the release of Modern Warfare 2 the highest grossing entertainment title in history. Both episodes are available as individual DLC for GTA IV, but are also available as a bundle on store shelves, and do not require the original game to play, however, it certainly helps to have played the original.

What do the following have in common: William Wallace, Niko Bellic, South Africans since 1994? That was an easy one, the answer is freedom! And that is exactly what you get in the Grand Theft Auto games. Although true freedom is quite a stretch when it comes to games, as you quickly find out in this particular series. It does create quite the illusion though. Liberty City is, as the name implies, again the venue for this adventure that takes place during the same time as Niko Bellic’s time there. You get to go where you want and do what you want, but not without consequence. The police will act harshly on those who transgress.

The Sims franchise has always been aimed at girls. No boy worth his salt will even come close to this game, and most will not even admit that it is a game at all. Let’s face it, playing with dolls cannot be described as a game. Neither can dressing people in pretty clothes, designing their homes with colourful decorations or making them go to the loo. And now with this expansion pack they also get to go to gay Paris. Every manly man’s skin must be crawling by now. It is funny then, that I am having a hard time to stop playing The Sims 3 World Adventures!

Aaah, episodic content! An enticing way for software publishers to score plenty of quick bucks, and for consumers to never quite get the value-for-money they expect or deserve! You can probably tell I’m more than a tad skeptical of the whole concept of episodic content, since it seems like a convenient excuse for developers to stretch out a title for as long as possible, and squeeze out every drop of profit in the process. With this in mind, I approached Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures: Episode 1 – Fright of the Bumblebees with a great degree of trepidation, and more than a mild dash of cynicism.

Playing Forza Motorsport 3 brought to mind a question I raised while reviewing a previous entry into the genre of realism-based simulation racing games, Superstars V8 Racing: is the racing simulation genre a ‘solved problem’?
Only now the question becomes even more vehement as Forza Motorsport 3 enters the market. With a wealth of features, content and improvements over the last instalment, as well as an overall theme of customisability that extends to virtually every aspect of the experience to ensure players of all skill levels can play, is Forza Motorsport 3 the ultimate racing simulator?

Gamers have been spoilt for choice this year, with a number of AAA titles being released on to store shelves over the past few months. Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time definitely earns itself a place in this selection, being a fun, well-polished and oft-times challenging adventure game that boasts serious production value.

Now I can’t claim to be an expert in the Ratchet & Clank series, this being my first exploration into the world of the popular Lombax and robot pair, however, it is a title that I have been keeping my eye on since the game was first unveiled earlier this year. It was something about the tongue-in-cheek humour of the protagonists that caught my attention and the inevitability of intriguing time puzzles, given the subtitle of the game, and creative weapons that promised to both challenge and amuse me.
