Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has claimed the number 1 spot on the UK’s All Format Charts for a fifth week, despite an 11% sales decrease. The big question on everyone’s lips is can it stick it out for a sixth week to claim the Christmas number 1 position as the original Modern Warfare 2 did two years ago.

Wii Sports Resort climbs up to number 2 thanks to a 17% sales boost while Assassin’s Creed II hangs on to third (-3%). Wii Fit Plus also moves up the chart to number 4 (+11%) and FIFA 10 falls three places to fifth (-15%).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is at number 6 (-5%) while Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is at number 7 (+15%).
Just Dance from Ubisoft climbs to number 8, moving up from last week’s number 30 thanks to a 274% sales boost. Forza Motorsport 3 keeps up its speed on the track at number 9 (+15%) and Mario Kart Wii gains 18% to finish tenth, giving Mario his third Top 10 title.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS debuts at number 12 while James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game enters the chart at number 29 (+108%) with improved sales thanks to the release of the film drawing nearer.

The US games industry’s performance numbers are out for November and,
as expected, software sales were
lead dominated by Activision / Infinity Ward’s
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game sold 4.2 million copies during the month on Microsoft’s console, while the version for Sony’s machine sold 1.9 million. Coming in an extremely strong second was
New Super Mario Bros. Wii at 1.4 million copies, proving that 1) people still love the plumber and 2) if a Wii game is published by Nintendo, it sells like crazy (well, unless it also has “
Wii Music” in its title).
Nintendo lead in hardware sales, with the number of DS units sold skyrocketing by 262% to 1.7 million units — that’s better than the same month last year. Wii sold over two million last November; this year it hit 1.26 million for the month, indicative of the year-long decline in sales the console’s been experiencing. Its competitors, Xbox 360 and PS3, sold 820 thousand and 710 thousand units, respectively.
-DS: 1.7M
1.2M (+262%)
-Wii: 1.26M

-360: 820K
570K (+228%)
-PS3: 710K

-PSP: 294K

-PS2: 203K

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has debuted at number 1 on the Japanese software chart with a whopping 935 000 copies. The release of the anticipated title in Japan broke Nintendo’s sales records for the publisher’s Wii console, becoming the biggest sales debut for a Wii game ever with an enormous 422 000 units sold on its first day of availability. The game also beat Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which sold 816 000 copies in one week) in terms of first week sales numbers for the region.

Sega’s Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP entered the chart at number 2 with an impressive 287 000 copies, while Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus, also for the PSP, was new at number 3 with 223 000 copies. Samurai Warriors for the Wii debuted at number 4 with 121 000 copies.
Professor Layton and the Flute of the Malevolent Destiny for the DS drops four places to number 5 with 85 000 copies while Friend Collection moves down four spots to sixth with 75 000 copies. Though the November NPD sales report won’t be released until later this week, gaming industry analyst (and possible soothsayer) Michael Pachter has predicted November’s biggest players in the gaming hardware and software markets. Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the highlighted title in his report — not only does the report claim the game sold around 6 million units last month in the U.S. (for about $350 million), it credits the game with pulling the industry out of a downward spiral that it’s followed for seven of the past eight months.
The report also awards a large gold-star sticker to the PlayStation 3, which is predicted to have sold 700,000 units in November, an 85-percent year-over-year sales increase. Despite the two upswings, Pachter’s report ends on a decidedly dour note, stating, “as 2009 draws to an end, it is clear that it will end as a horrible year for video game publishers.” Pachter suggests that sales will drop off once more in December. Happy holidays, gaming industry professionals!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues its crushing sales supremacy over every other game in Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart this past week, crunching Fifa 10 at No. 2 and Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3 this week to snatch No. 1 once again.
Modern Warfare 2’s sales are down a miniscule 7%, which is small enough to retain its market leading performance for the fourth week in a row. We’ll have to wait and see if it matches its older sibling, Call of Duty: World at War, which managed a straight five weeks at No. 1 before being overtaken by Fifa 09.
The same pattern could be followed as Fifa 10 (sales up 24%) is looking quite dangerous, and despite what must be a desponding defeat this week, the football sim manages to climb to No. 2 from No. 4 last week, pushing Assassin’s Creed II down to No. 3 this week from No. 2, causing a domino effect that catches New Super Mario Bros. Wii and sends it to No. 4 from No. 3 last week.

Wii Sports Resort (sales up 30%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 21%) continue their chart dominance tussle, effectively swapping places with one another as Wii Sports Resort lands at No. 5 from No. 6, and Wii Fit Plus sits at No. 6 from No. 5.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (sales up by 28%) is a non-mover at No. 7 as LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (sales up 74%) shoots up to No. 8 from No. 12 last week. Forza Motorsport 3 (sales up 27%) stubbornly resists moving from No. 9, and Mario Kart Wii (sales up 24%) makes its way back into the coveted Top Ten, shifting into No. 10 from No. 11 last week.
Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes Left 4 Dead 2 dropping to No. 14 from No. 8 last week, F1 2009 losing a few places and charting at No. 16 from No. 10, Batman: Arkham Asylum (sales up 122%) re-entering the chart at No. 20 thanks to a retailer promotion, and Peppa Pig: The Game (sales up 384%) is launched back into the chart with the release of the Wii version.
Borderlands meanwhile reclaims positions and shifts to No. 23 from way down at No. 38 last week, Just Dance (sales up 290%) re-enters the chart at No. 30, and The Saboteur debuts in the chart at a lowly No. 39 in its first week on sale.
The Top Ten All Format UK Software Sales Chart follows below:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
- FIFA 10 (EA)
- Assassin’s Creed II (Ubisoft)
- New Super Mario Bros Wii. (Nintendo)
- Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
- Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo)
- LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues (LusasArts)
- Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft)
- Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)

The latest Media Create figures show that the new Professor Layton adventure from Level 5 sold an impressive 306 000 copies in its opening week.

Wii Fit Plus re-enters the Top 10, up nine places to number 4 with 47 000 copies while Momotaro Railway 2010 for the Wii debuts at number 5 with 44 000 copies. Inazuma Eleven 2: Threat of the Invaders drops two places to number 6 with 28 000 copies and World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010 for the PS3 remains in seventh with 20 000 copies.

For the second week in a row, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken perch atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, fending off valiant advances from newcomers such as Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the process.
Sales of Modern Warfare 2 this past week dropped a massive 86% from its enormous launch week, which makes this chart topping feat all the more impressive.
Assassin’s Creed II (releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP) debuts at No. 2, outperforming the original entry to the series by 12% on launch week (although the original title notably shot straight to No. 1 in its first week of sales in 2007).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii also makes its first chart appearance, only below Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3, while two other Nintendo titles, Wii Sports Resort (sales down 10%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 10%) take positions 4 and 5 respectively (dropping from No. 2 and No. 4 respectively).
Fifa 10 (sales down 5%) drops from No. 3 to No. 6 this week, as Left 4 Dead 2, another debut title in the UK, charts at No. 7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games steps down to No. 8 this week from No. 6, Forza Motorsport 3 falls to No. 9 from No. 5 last week, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame appears at No. 10, moving down from No. 7 last week.
Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes the debut of Codemasters’ Formula One racing game, F1 2009 on Wii and PSP at No. 11, the debut of LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues at No. 16, Dragon Age: Origins slipping down to No. 17 from No. 13 last week and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City falling to No. 21 from No. 10 last week.
Meanwhile, Football Manager 2010 fumbles its way to No. 23 from No. 12, Style Boutique shoots up the chart to No. 25 this week from No. 40, Uncharted 2 trips and falls to No. 29 from No. 18, Tekken 6 drops to No. 33 from No. 20 last week, DJ Hero continues its poor performance by slipping down further to No. 35 from No. 27, and LittleBigPlanet re-enters the chart at No. 38 thanks to the release of the PSP version.
