Banjo & Kazooie spotted on Xbox version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

December 15th, 2009 at 08:39pm Under Xbox 360

One of these box arts is not like the others. Yep, you’ll notice that the Xbox 360 version of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing has two added bonuses: Banjo and Kazooie. At first, we were quick to dismiss the image as nothing more than a fan mock-up. However, TSSZ discovered that all of these box arts can be seen on Sega’s server (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii).

If the addition of Banjo and Kazooie to Sega’s kart racer sounds familiar, it’s because it was part of a Sega leak earlier this year that contemplated this exact partnership. Revisiting the supposedly leaked Sega document reveals a number of bullet points that have already come true: the PS3 price drop, Alpha Protocol’s delay and Yakuza’s localization. The addition of Banjo & Kazooie to the Sonic racer is a nice bonus; however, should other aspects of the Sega document come true, it could mean PS2 and Dreamcast games are coming to PSN.

[Thanks Tristan!]

ToeJam & Earl creator says XBLA port not so certain; future games in franchise still a possibility

November 9th, 2009 at 07:30pm Under DS

Greg Johnson has been in the game industry for a long time. Having designed 16-bit Sega icons ToeJam & Earl way back in the early 90s and now running Humanature Studios, he’s seen his creation rise to fame and subsequently slip into gaming history as the years ticked by. But last summer, when Sega created a poll tasking fans with selecting the next Genesis title to get the XBLA treatment, ToeJam & Earl popped back up on our industry’s collective radar by taking the gold.

But it’s not so simple! Johnson says Sega may have “got ahead of themselves a little bit” with that announcement “and didn’t realize that they don’t have the rights to the property.” Apparently, Johnson assures us, “it’s an easy mistake to make.” This same shortcoming is also the reason why the characters will not be appearing in the upcoming Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, though showing up as DLC is still a possibility. “TJ&E will not be included … and the option for including them as downloadable content is still open,” Johnson said. “Sega said they’re not ready to talk about that yet because they haven’t started making any definite plans, but they promised to give me a shout when they get there – so hopefully we’ll be able to work something out.”

More interesting yet, it seems that Mr. Johnson shopped around the idea for a Nintendo DS multiplayer ToeJam & Earl game – though his pitch unfortunately met with deaf ears at “pretty much all of [the game publishers].” Check out some images of what could have been in the gallery below and continue past the break for more from our conversation with Greg Johnson.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing around the House of the Dead

October 30th, 2009 at 09:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is slowly absorbing the entire Sega catalog into one mascot racing universe. The latest franchise to be co-opted is The House of the Dead, whose Curien Mansion is revealed as a track in a new, spooky Halloween trailer (after the break). We can’t be sure, but we think we also caught glimpses of a zombie appearing both as a driver and a vehicle.

This zombie is the second appearance of the walking dead in All-Stars Racing. The first, of course, is the Shenmue franchise.

Now you’ll have to buy Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

October 7th, 2009 at 01:26pm Under DS

Just when you thought he’d finally get around to avenging his father’s death, Ryo Hazuki has appended one more thing to his lackadaisical to-do list: “Appear as a playable competitor in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.” It seems Sega might have a lucky hit (how about it?) on its hands, especially if the compulsion to purchase any new Shenmue-related material — no matter how tactlessly integrated — is as strong with you as it is with us.

Of course, one can hope (in vain) that Ryo and his forklift follow a similar trajectory to Rocket Knight, first appearing as an undignified cameo and then a proper protagonist. Expect to make your grudging purchase of All-Stars Racing sometime in 2010, henceforth referred to as the day of the incident.
