The BBFC classification site lists a “Sonic Classic Collection” coming to DS soon. Normally, with these ratings, we’d be left to speculate as to the identity of the games on the collection — however, the BBFC helpfully provided a list of games on the cart!
According to the rating, it’ll feature Sonic 1-3, plus Sonic and Knuckles — with the ability to virtually “Lock-on” and play as Knuckles in the older games. Also included in the shockingly specific list of in-game content: Sonic Chronicles and “The History of Sonic” video content and the art gallery.
We can only hope it turns out better than Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA.

According to Sega, the XBLA version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will soon become an Xbox Live Deal of the Week. The deal is scheduled to begin November 30 — just in time for the holidays — and will see the game’s price drop from 400
($5) to just 240
($3). That’s an absolute pittance for one of the best Sonic games out there, and with Project Needlemouse still a long way out, you’d be hard-pressed to do much better (seriously).

Major Nelson has shared with the internet the following facts: Army of Two, Midnight Club: LA and Sonic Unleashed are now available on Xbox Live Games on Demand. Army of Two and Midnight Club are available everywhere except Japan and North Korea, while the madness that is Sonic Unleashed is available worldwide. In North America, Army of Two is $19.99 and Midnight Club is $29.99. Sonic Unleashed will cost you $29.99 and the immediate forfeit of your immortal soul. Prices in other regions will vary (except for the soul part; we’re pretty sure that’s constant).

Just when you thought he’d finally get around to avenging his father’s death, Ryo Hazuki has appended one more thing to his lackadaisical to-do list: “Appear as a playable competitor in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.” It seems Sega might have a lucky hit (how about it?) on its hands, especially if the compulsion to purchase any new Shenmue-related material — no matter how tactlessly integrated — is as strong with you as it is with us.
Of course, one can hope (in vain) that Ryo and his forklift follow a similar trajectory to Rocket Knight, first appearing as an undignified cameo and then a proper protagonist. Expect to make your grudging purchase of All-Stars Racing sometime in 2010, henceforth referred to as the day of the incident.

Third-party peripheral purveyor Mad Catz has announced a new licensing agreement with Sega of America, which should see all manner of multiplatform Sonic the Hedgehog-branded accessories make their way onto store shelves sometime in the future. Darren Richardson, CEO and president of Mad Catz, is positively thrilled, saying, “We look forward to offering unique and exciting accessories to fans of this truly iconic videogame and popular culture character.”
Since the words “unique and exciting” haven’t been used to describe anything Sonic-related in years, it’s hard to imagine just how Mad Catz will leverage this license — short of becoming the next anthropomorphic sidekick. (Mad Catz: He doesn’t care what you think and wears a beret!) Obviously, next year’s release of a high-definition 2D Sonic game, Project Needlemouse, represents a great opportunity for tie-in peripherals. Perhaps a luxurious pillow covered in special tear-absorbing fabric.

Hello, what’s this? After a multitude of underwhelming 3D games featuring SEGA’s blazingly fast blue hedgehog, Sonic, it appears as though the company has heard the cries from the fans for a return to the 2D realm, and are answering those cries with a new 2D Sonic game to release next year.
The teaser trailer for this game, codenamed ‘Project Needlemouse,’ lies in wait below, accompanied by some art from a new website set up for the express purpose of further teasing fans with news of its pending arrival:

With Major Nelson taking this day of labor off, we look across the pond for word on this week’s Xbox Live Arcade title. As previously noted, it appears Sonic and Knuckles will be this week’s release at 400
($5). The good word comes from European Xbox community manager “AceyBongos,” which just doesn’t have the same ring as “Major Nelson.” Could Microsoft at least make the guy a general or captain?
Update: Joining the hedgehog and the echidna will be the inventor and his faithful companion. Major Nelson brings word that the mischief of Wallace and Gromit Episode 2: The Last Resort will also be available this Wednesday for 800
($10).
Update 2: Last minute change: No Wallace and Gromit.

Once again, Xbox Live Arcade will be visited by a ghostly vision of Sonic the Hedgehog’s good (see: not terrible) old days — Shacknews is reporting that the Sega Vintage Collection 2 series will draw to a close on September 9 with the release of Sonic & Kunckles. As hinted at when this Sega collection was first announced, owners of the previous Sonic XBLA titles will have access to bonuses in the latest installment — including the “Blue Sphere” mode (Sonic 1), as well as the ability to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and 3.
We’ve contacted Sega to confirm the release date and get pricing details — and also to discover whether the Wii version of the game (revealed by an ESRB listing) will be made available simultaneously.

We thought we had been cured of all vestiges of Sonic fandom — the last several years having made caring about Sonic games unbearably painful. But then a speed-skating Metal Sonic showed up in this Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games trailer, and we were, however briefly, thrilled.
Other items of interest in this trailer: superfluous Sonic character Silver the Hedgehog getting really into curling, a Bowser/Bowser Jr. team (which confused us a lot when we initially thought it was a paradoxical Bowser/Baby Bowser team), and snowboarding! Which seems to be awfully close to the concept of Sonic Riders. And in the gallery, a few pictures of snowball fights! Is snowball fighting an Olympic sport now? If so, we’ll actually pay attention to the TV broadcasts.

Listen — not every game at E3 is a winner. The Joystiq heavyweights get to go play all the big games and interview all of the developer hotshots, and that’s the stuff you love reading about. But some of us are down in the trenches, doing all of the demos that no one else wants to do, checking out all the games whose names are read around the schedule planning table, and answered only with the silence of bloggers who have better games to play.
That’s not to say that Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics is a bad game — its audience will probably enjoy it. Just like the previous Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, it offers multiple Olympic sports-based minigames featuring popular Nintendo and Sega characters, controlled by various Wii and DS motions. People who like buying that kind of thing (parents wandering a videogame store looking for wholesome family entertainment) will probably enjoy it. But even though most of the Joystiq staff passed on this demo (and your faithful blogger bravely attended it), it was one of the more surreal things we’ve seen this week. Our strange experiences, let us show you them.
