Square Enix plans ‘0 Day Attack on Earth’ for Dec. 23

December 14th, 2009 at 05:00pm Under Xbox 360

Square Enix is swooping in like some kind of Tetsuya Nomura-designed Santa Claus and delivering the world what it wants — nay, needs — just in time for the hap-hap-happiest time of the year: a twin-stick shooter for Xbox Live Arcade. Its been announced via the game’s official Twitter feed that 0 Day Attack in Earth will invade the Xbox Live Marketplace on December 23.

Like Sony’s The Last Guy, 0 Day Attack on Earth uses satellite photography for its real-world city battle zones — only players are tooling around high above the ground blasting ginormous alien invaders with a friend, or just solo. We went hands-in with the game at TGS 2009 and found it to be … well, the verdict’s still out of this world.

Square Enix teases something ’stylish’ for FFXIII

December 14th, 2009 at 03:31pm Under Xbox 360

As if the wait for Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t already difficult enough, Square Enix’s assistant PR director, Sonia Im, is making it even more torturous. On her Twitter account, Im teased “something cool most of you can participate in a few days from now” within a mysterious Square Enix memo. Im later added that the memo “eluded [sic] to something stylish.” If you squint, the date in the memo seems to be December 17, which would coincide with a PSN update.

It’s anybody’s guess past that, but we’re hoping for a totally magical Final Fantasy-themed fancy dress party for us and a few of our closest friends, set inside PlayStation Home. Can you even imagine?

That, or a demo like the one our Japanese friends already have. Either way.

Wada wants Japanese gamers to stop discriminating against Western games

December 8th, 2009 at 06:00pm Under Xbox 360

[Hachimaki]

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada wants Japanese gamers to be more open to Western games. In a Japanese TV interview (excerpted and translated by Kotaku), Wada said, “Even now, there have been people in Japan using the label youge- (literally ‘Western games’) with a terribly discriminatory meaning.” While the concern about Western games may seem uncharacteristic for the head of a Japanese publisher, this is the Japanese publisher who just purchased Eidos, and who is currently marketing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in Japan.

“I’d like them to try it once,” Wada said about Modern Warfare 2. “If they play it once, they’d realize how incorrect that label is.” Just like the subtitles.

New Crystal Bearers trailer is exciting, a little mean

December 7th, 2009 at 10:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Square Enix has created a thrilling, cinematic trailer for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers — and it didn’t even have to lean on the Bon Jovi crutch! The latest trailer for the Wii action title makes it look kind of like a Final Fantasy take on the Indiana Jones style of adventure story — complete with the hero being a total jerk. Instead of a whip and years of archaeological study, however, Layle has the ability to lift stuff with his mind.

We always feel compelled to remind everyone about this game, especially since it’s tucked away the day after Christmas. So here it is. Once again, that’s Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

Modern Warfare 2’s poor translation, censorship in Japan draws ire

December 4th, 2009 at 02:28pm Under Xbox 360

When Square Enix enlisted to localize Modern Warfare 2 for Japan, the publisher went above and beyond the call of duty. The game would be issued a complete Japanese-dialog makeover — whereas the first Modern Warfare localization was simply subtitled — in response to a “strong desire from Activision to widen the entrance for beginning FPS players,” as Square Enix told Famitsu. However, some gamers are reporting that the extra effort has fallen short, citing numerous translation errors in the localized game. [Insert your Bill Murray joke here.]

Additionally, Japanese site My Game Flash has rounded up other complaints about the localization, most notably an alteration to the sensationalized “No Russian” mission. Rather than delete the mission (as in the censored Russian version), Square Enix had the Japanese version of the mission adjusted to restrict the player from participating in a terrorist assault on an airport. If the player does engage civilian targets, it’s game over.

Square Enix has posted an update on the Modern Warfare 2 Japanese site describing the full Japanese language and subtitle tracks and warning of the “No Russian” edits, but has not announced plans to patch the translation errors or change the limitations on the censored mission. The publisher has cited technical limitations, which prevent selectable English and Japanese language tracks. Head past the break to see some footage of the Japanese version of MW2, courtesy of andriasang.

Trademark suggests upcoming European release for Dragon Quest IX

December 3rd, 2009 at 01:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

While we wait for the real, official announcement we so desperately need to hear from Square Enix, another hint has been dropped about a Western release for Dragon Quest IX.

Square Enix has filed a series of trademarks for the phrase “Sentinels of the Starry Skies” in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German (search for trademark #008724528 on the EU trademark database to see the English application for yourself). The phrase corresponds closely to the Japanese subtitle of Dragon Quest IX, Hoshizora no Mamorubito (”Defenders of the Starry Sky”).

The publisher could be waiting to get its other big RPG out the door before saying anything. It previously noted that if it does localize the DS game (which it will!) it’ll be in the next fiscal year, which starts in April.

Square Enix edutaining Japan’s children with Miffy

December 1st, 2009 at 05:15pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Last year, Square Enix released a couple of licensed DS games in Japan based on Snoopy and Pingu, targeted at children. While the Pure Dreams label didn’t last beyond those two games, the company is still producing licensed content for young gamers, most recently in the form of a Miffy game for Wii.

Oyako de Asobo Miffy no Omochabako (Play for Kids and Parents Miffy’s Toybox) is an edutainment game with 25 different minigames, all featuring the adorable, X-mouthed rabbit, designed for parents and youngsters to play together. A coloring minigame can be transferred from the Wii game to the DS.

When Final Fantasy XIII comes out in North America in March, it’ll already be old hat to Japanese gamers, who will be eagerly awaiting the March 18 release of this game.

Santa’s Dragon Quest IX cameo now available in Japan

November 28th, 2009 at 02:45pm Under DS

He might know if you’ve been bad or good, but that won’t stop St. Nick from sending you on a horse-related fetch quest in new DLC for Dragon Quest IX in Japan. Released on November 27, the Mr. Claus’ Horse downloadable content brings the mythical gift giver to the insanely popular Nintendo DS title.

Sadly, we can only hope Square Enix plans to include this and previous Dragon Quest IX DLC when the game eventually lands in North American stores. You’d think a guy with a sleigh and a few flying reindeer could help speed-up the process, but apparently Santa’s busy horse-sitting.

Twitter users unlock Final Fantasy XIII chocobo Avatar item

November 25th, 2009 at 06:20pm Under Xbox 360

In a feat considerably easier than breeding a golden chocobo in Final Fantasy VII, fans of Square Enix’s thirteenth Final outing have unlocked a special Xbox Live Avatar item through the power of word of mouth (via keyboard). After garnering enough specially tagged messages on Twitter (some speculate that this may have represent some sort of “marketing tactic”), the folks at Microsoft have seen fit to entrust an adorable virtual chocobo to your Avatar.

If you’re in North America, UK, France or Germany and registered on the site, you can expect a download code via email by mid-December. If not, we’ve placed something after the break to cheer you up.
