The BBC iPlayer, only available in the UK, is proof that streaming video can work on the Wii — like the Wii no Ma service, Minna no Theater Wii, and the Nintendo Channel. Well, maybe not that last one, given the stuttery playback of Nintendo Week whenever we attempt to watch it.
As rumored, the Wii’s iPlayer is moving up from a nice browser-based app to its very own Wii Channel. BBC dated the launch of the new iPlayer download for November 18. It’ll be a free download, and, once again, only available in the UK. We’d pay the licence fee if you’d let us, BBC!
[Thanks, Bobulous!]

While the Xbox 360 Sky Player apparently launched in the UK yesterday as planned, things veered away from the plan almost immediately thereafter. The service was “suspended” shortly after launch, for what must be the best possible problem in Microsoft’s eyes: too many subscribers.
“Unfortunately due to the unprecedented levels of simultaneous demand,” a statement on Xbox.com reads, “we did not have the capacity to satisfy all service requests and therefore temporarily suspended all access to the service.” The service is being reinstated in phases today, presumably with some upgrades in place to deal with the demand. An earlier statement (reproduced on Engadget) specified tomorrow as the target date for the relaunch — it seems likely that all users will be returned to their regularly scheduled programming then.

While Microsoft and Netflix underlings tiptoe around the issue of the movie-rental company’s streaming service for other game consoles — currently “exclusive” to Xbox 360 — Netflix CEO Reed Hastings tells Reuters he wants the feature on every console. The executive notes that “currently [Netflix's] Xbox deal is exclusive and [Netflix hasn't] characterized it more than that,” leaving the door at least slightly ajar for other consoles and media devices to enter into Netflix streaming deals of their own.
That’s the big question: For how long is the exclusivity agreement between Netflix and Microsoft, and is it renewable? Answering that question — believe us, we’ve tried — would tell us when to expect a flood of Netflix-streaming systems.

MediaMall Technologies has opened up a beta of the Wii version of its PlayOn streaming media software, already available for PS3, Xbox 360 and other devices. Basically, that means that you should be able to download the PC software and then use the Internet Channel to watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other content on your TV.
There’s a 14-day free trial of the software, after which you have to pay $39.99 for the full version — by the way, we couldn’t help but notice that the price has increased, and the duration of the trial decreased, since last year. $40 is kind of a lot, but not when compared to the cost of an Xbox 360 or another Netflix-capable device. Unless it turns out not to work well — which many of us are no doubt on our way to determining right now.

An “industry executive familiar with Netflix’s plans” tells Multichannel that the company’s streaming service will soon be available for the Wii and iPhone/iPod Touch. Before iPhone folks get too excited, though, the speculation is that the streaming service will only be available across Wi-Fi and not AT&T’s 3G system — which already has enough stability “issues.”
Netflix streaming on the Wii has been alluded to for quite some time, with the company previously telling us that it’s “always looking for ways to expand its service, but for now [its] game platform is the Xbox 360.” As for the PS3 … um, you can always pick up a Bravia.
Update: Netflix has responded to our inquiry with an old gem: “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

Lionsgate president of digital media Curt Marvis is hopeful that Nintendo will launch a worldwide movie store sometime soon. In an interview with Casualgaming.biz, Marvis explained that Lionsgate’s current strategy is to sell more film and television properties through connected video game consoles.
According to Marvis, the horror and action genres are best suited for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users, but the Wii is likely to sell more “mass-market” content, due to its “broader audience.” Currently, the Nintendo Wii has streaming film and television content available in Japan, although rumors have been swirling that Netflix is a possibility on the console Stateside. Thanks for at least stirring the pot in a different direction, Curt!

U2 is set to unleash the video for its new single, “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” on August 17 in the UK, however PS3 and PSP owners will get an early glimpse at the new video, thanks to streaming service VidZone.
The news comes courtesy of Casualgaming.biz, who reports that Vidzone doesn’t have an ETA for the animated video at the moment, though it’ll likely be before August 17. We know how important this is to all of you, so we’re going to be hitting F5 on VidZone’s site up until then, so we can break this most important news as early as possible. Viva la Edge!

Yesterday, Zip.ca announced a partnership with Sonic Solutions to become the first online streaming film and TV show rental service in Canada. Speaking with Joystiq, Zip.ca CEO Curt Millar said his company “would love” to bring the service to Canadian video game consoles — similar to the Netflix streaming service currently available on Xbox 360’s in the United States — but no agreements are in place with any of the three game console manufacturers.
“Our whole strategy on this is to be available on every platform that we can be available on,” Millar said. “We believe for consumer adoption to be high, you need to have it so that the consumer doesn’t have to worry about how it works. It should just work on everything.” According to Millar, partnering with an American company — such as Sonic Solutions — allows Zip.ca to put forth “a better presentation” when looking to secure agreements with partners, like the major console makers.
Streaming content to consoles isn’t exactly new to Zip.ca’s partner. Sonic Solutions recently announced it would begin offering movies from its catalog to Fujisoft’s streaming Wii video service, Minna no Theater Wii, in Japan through its Roxio CinemaNow platform.

Sonic Solutions has just announced that it will begin offering movies from its catalog to Fujisoft’s streaming Wii video service, Minna no Theater Wii. The Roxio CinemaNow service, as offered through Minna no Theater, will offer both new releases and older titles from the Paramount archives, to users of the downloadable WiiWare video streaming application, which is currently available only in Japan. Though Lionsgate content isn’t specified in this agreement, it’s worth noting that Cinemanow also distributes movies from that company, an executive of which predicted an agreement much like this.
Minna no Theatre is one of two WiiWare-based streaming video offerings, the other being Nintendo’s Wii no Ma Channel, which is currently focused on original programming. Fujisoft has indicated plans to release Minna no Theater in North America.
