See Mario transformed into bacteria

December 16th, 2009 at 04:30pm Under DS

We’re always happy to see gaming encroaching on the rest of the world, a sign that it’s becoming more culturally accepted and mainstream, but this example is so nerdy, it might actually be a step in the other direction. What you see on the right there is the classic NES Mario sprite, recreated in specifically-engineered bacteria by the nanobiology laboratories at the University of Osaka, Japan.

We love the idea of gaming’s leading man being transformed this way, we can’t help but think how great it would have been if Team Osaka could have achieved the same effect with fungus. … You know, because the Mushroom Kin — oh, never mind.

Iwata Asks: 25 years with Miyamoto’s dev posse

December 15th, 2009 at 10:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

In the most recent edition of Iwata Asks, Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata gathers up Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago for a thorough discussion of their time with the company, the many projects they’ve worked on and their 25-year-long partnership with Shigeru Miyamoto. Let’s break it down: Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago both started at Nintendo around 1984, helping to shape everything from Balloon Fight to Super Mario Bros. These guys were part of the team that developed Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda – at the same time.

During the 10-page chat, a plethora of interesting tidbits are revealed about some of the game industry’s most influential Nintendo titles. Did you know that Zelda was initially designed as a dungeon game without an overworld? Or, how about the revelation that World 1-1 was created last, after the rest of the levels in Super Mario Bros., and designed implicitly to teach the game to non-gamers? The chat even gets into the lurid sleeping arrangements of Miyamota-san and Nakago-san while on business trips for ExciteBike (spoiler: it’s not that lurid).

Robotic man plays Mario theme with one hand

December 7th, 2009 at 02:00pm Under DS

We’re willing to abide a lot around Joystiq HQ, but from the start we’ve had one basic, simple rule. We don’t cotton to robots. We know that society has come to depend on them for odd jobs like fruit juicing and child care, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept them.

It should be a great testament then to the skill of YouTube user RigorMortis999 that we’re willing to break our own prime directive to bring you his one-handed version of the Super Mario Bros. theme, which you’ll find right after the break. Sure, he’s quite obviously a robot, but we think it’s safe to assume he’s a friendly one.

Laser etcher plays the Mario theme for you

November 16th, 2009 at 02:45pm Under DS

How To Ruin Your Moment of Internet Glory:
  1. Work for an unconscionable number of hours making a laser etcher improbably play a fine rendition of the World 1-1 music from Super Mario Bros.
  2. Let Cory Doctorow film it.
  3. Listen as he rewards your hard work with terrible internet cliches, and, in doing so, almost completely obscures the audio you crafted.
  4. Cry yourself to sleep.

Video tutorial right after the break.

Review: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

November 13th, 2009 at 04:30pm Under Wii / Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn’t a game for you to play by yourself. Sure, you could, but it’s just not going to be the best way to extract all of the fun the experience has to offer. Instead, you really should try to corral some friends together for multiplayer, which is guaranteed to do one of two things: strengthen the bonds you and your three partners in platforming have established, or take those friendships you’ve worked so hard on over an indeterminate amount of time and stomp them like a lost, lonely Goomba.

Nintendo takes the fun out of discovery with New Super Mario Bros. Wii tips video

November 12th, 2009 at 11:45pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Remember all those secret areas and level-skipping tactics from way back when you first played Super Mario Bros. on NES? Back before you could watch videos created by Nintendo showing off those very same tricks passed from friend to friend by word of mouth – before the internet was even a gleam in Al Gore’s eye!

Though our old, embittered brains remember those days fondly, you kids today with your shiny electronics and worldwide exchange of information get the not-so-secret tips straight from the horse’s mouth (in sorta high-resolution, no less) on New Super Mario Bros. Wii. After watching the video you see above, we came to a scary realization: there are people out there who might not have any 2D Mario strategies already embedded in their brains. Folks, if you don’t have any sort of tactic worked out for red coin collection, we’re not sure this video can help you. Or if anyone can, for that matter.

Thankfully, we have a much cooler video after the break.

You are not likely as hardcore as these Mario fans

October 29th, 2009 at 07:45pm Under DS

You might have noticed a less than offensive Nintendo tattoo donning the image space above this sentence you’re reading, and could very well be wondering why this is the case. As it turns out, the Super Mario Bros.-themed images of Princess Peach and a Star are a bit too graphic for use on Joystiq. They are, however, quite unique – rather than the ol’ ink-permanently-embedded-in-skin treatment of traditional tattoos, the aforementioned two employ a method of tattooing that involves skin removal. Check out the original shots over at BodyMod.org if you want to see ‘em, but click through at your own discretion.

[Thanks Adam!]

New, super character art from New Super Mario Bros. Wii

October 26th, 2009 at 02:15pm Under Wii / Nintendo

The new multiplayer mode in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is great, as is the apparent difficulty of the new levels. We’re curious about the Super Guide feature as well. But for some Mario fans, the real draw to the latest sidescroller can be seen above: the Koopalings, returning for the first time in a traditional Mario game since Super Mario World. While, of course, we’d still prefer a 2D adventure, Iggy, Morton, et al. have made the transition to 3D quite well!

Nintendo released that render along with some other character and enemy art, and an image of the bizarre all-red box art. See what a Goomba looks like now in our gallery. Spoiler: pretty much like it always looks.

Mario World marriage proposal is clever (but kinda creepy)

October 19th, 2009 at 11:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

Marriage proposals via video games aren’t exactly new, but they’re still clever — and usually cute. Last Thursday, Brad Smith proposed to his girlfriend of five years using a hacked version of Super Mario World, placing coins in world 1-1 to spell out, “Will you marry me?” Cute, right? But we have to question Brad’s filming of the occasion, because, if we didn’t know better, we’d think the couple was being watched by a serial killer hiding behind their couch. You can see what we mean after the break.

Seriously — tell us that, when the camera pulls back to catch Brad on his knee, ring in hand, you don’t want to yell out, “Look out! There’s someone else in the room!” Or maybe it’s just the close proximity to Halloween that’s got us all on edge. Still … Brad, if you’re reading this, please drop us a line to let us know you’re alright?

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is ‘pretty difficult’

October 16th, 2009 at 12:20pm Under Wii / Nintendo

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is “pretty difficult,” series creator Shigeru Miyamoto told us at a NYC press demo yesterday, acknowledging complaints that the previous 2D iteration of the franchise was too easy. After our disastrous performance in last week’s hands-on, we’d agree with that assessment.

While “Demo Play” makes concessions towards novice players, NSMBW celebrates hardcore gameplay. By earning the super coins hidden through each level, you’ll be able to unlock a series of “Super Guide” videos that highlight “super skills” tactics. These videos will reveal how to get infinite 1-ups, find the secret goals and show alternate ways of playing the game. (One video we saw showed three Yoshis working in tandem to lick and spit a hapless Luigi throughout the level.)

The newly released video above highlights some of the various stages in NSMBW. Does it look “difficult” to you? You can also check out North America’s all-red packaging after the break.
