Rumor: Gaming conventions to convene in Xbox Live

November 30th, 2009 at 06:00pm Under Xbox 360

According to a recent survey conducted by market research company VGMarket, Microsoft may be working on an “interactive, online version” of your favorite gaming conventions — from E3 to ComicCon and everything in between. As noted by a Destructoid reader who took the survey, the online questionnaire presented the aforementioned hypothetical situation, and then went into detail about how such a situation might play out.

“Sign onto Xbox Live and you can enter a virtual version of that convention … this virtual version contains 20-60 virtual booths sponsored by larger publishers and developers presenting at the real world show,” imagined the survey. The possibilities then reached outrageous levels as the idea of downloading “demos and/or betas” directly from the virtual convention floor and playing them that very moment was suggested. However, as VGMarket doesn’t list Microsoft among its clients on the company’s official website, and a representative could not be reached for comment, the veracity of this survey and its information is still very much in question.

Rumor: Survey gauges interest in pay-to-play 1 vs. 100 [update]

August 24th, 2009 at 06:30pm Under Xbox 360

Xbox Live’s 1 vs. 100 has a unique premise among console games. Rather than charge Xbox Live members for the ability to play, the “show” is supported by advertisements, which occasionally break up the gameplay. In some ways, it’s a perk of being an Xbox Live Gold member, as Silver members are locked out of the virtual studio. That said, it looks like Microsoft might be reconsidering the strategy behind the game.

A Joystiq tipster sent us the image seen above, which was supposedly taken from a survey on MyThoughtCounts.com. The survey asks quite simply, “If 1 vs 100 were not available as part of your Gold Membership account, how likely would you be to purchase 1 vs 100 for $15 per season (13 weeks)?” If the survey is genuine, 1 vs. 100 might not be free after all. Is this what the Season Pass was all about?

We’re not sure what would trigger such a change of heart: perhaps the prize model isn’t as viable as Microsoft had hoped, or perhaps the number of viewers is lower than expected. Of course, it’s only a survey, and it certainly isn’t a confirmation that 1 vs. 100 will see any significant changes at all.

We’ve contacted Microsoft regarding the possibility and will update this post with any new info.

Update: We’ve heard back from Microsoft, which — unsurprisingly — didn’t directly address the survey or potential pay-to-play model for XBL Silver members. You can read the full MS statement after the break.

Game Informer: Xbox 360 at 54.2 percent failure rate

August 17th, 2009 at 05:01pm Under Xbox 360

digg_url = ‘http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/game-informer-xbox-360-at-54-2-percent-failure-rate/’; The latest issue of Game Informer contains a surprising statistic for anyone who’s ever loved and lost their Microsoft-branded home console – according to their survey, in which over 5,000 console owners participated, the Xbox 360’s current failure rate due to the Red Ring of Death, E74 or other hardware failure is 54.2 percent. They also calculated the relative death toll for PS3s due to the Yellow Light of Death (10.3 percent) and Wiis, due to … well, we’re not actually sure what color the Wii’s light turns to upon its demise (6.8 percent).

Unfortunately, for having the highest failure rate, survey participants also pinned Microsoft for having the least helpful customer service representatives. Not that it matters – later in the survey, only 3.8 percent of participants said they’d never buy another Xbox 360 due to its high failure rate.

Speaking of which, we’re not sure what future techno-utopia this poll was conducted in, but a 54.2 percent Xbox 360 failure rate sounds awfully low. Had the survey’s participants been comprised entirely of Joystiq staffers, it would have been a bone-chilling 100 percent.

Nielsen: 360 has most ‘active users’ in 2009, Wii has fewest

August 11th, 2009 at 03:00pm Under Wii / Nintendo

We imagine those six multicolored lines you see above are going to cause quite a stir among the various fanboy contingencies — they represent the percentage of “active users” on different consoles in the first half of 2009, according to survey data compiled by Nielsen. As you can see, the Xbox 360 dominated the charts, while the ubiquitously successful Wii came in dead last by a huge margin, ranking below the PS2, original Xbox and GameCube.

Our initial reaction to this data was that Nielsen is high on pot, but we can kinda understand what caused the Wii’s disappointing placement on the list — the chart is tracking the percent of console owners who use their gaming hardware on a regular basis. Everyone and their dog owns a Wii by this point, but very few actually play them consistently, according to Nielsen’s findings. Meanwhile, there’s only a handful of GameCubes out there that haven’t been converted into lunchboxes, and their owners apparently use them a bit more frequently.

If you’re looking for a more straightforward breakdown of console usage, Nielsen also figured the overall usage totals for each console. That chart’s posted after the jump. (You’ll find it slightly above the deluge of inflammatory comments.)

Rumorang: Survey suggests Netflix streaming on Wii

June 23rd, 2009 at 11:05pm Under Wii / Nintendo

A survey we reported on back in March about the possibility of Netflix video streaming on the Nintendo Wii has popped up again on our radar, but this time with one very noticeable difference. Today, a former Joystiq staff member was given a similar survey to fill out, but instead of the $10 charge for the “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” mentioned in the previous questionnaire, this time it noted the disc would be “available for free.”

We contacted both Nintendo and Netflix for comment. The House of Mario had nothing to say on the matter. A Netflix spokesperson informed us, “Netflix is always looking for ways to expand its service, but for now our game platform is the Xbox 360.”

We’ll say exactly what we said last time: This survey in no way validates that Netflix support is confirmed for the Wii, but it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking that the service would want to tap into the Wii’s “particular” demographic.
