Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm now support Xbox child accounts in US

December 15th, 2009 at 03:26pm Under Xbox 360

The man known as Major Nelson has been so kind as to remind us all that child accounts for Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm have now been enabled for US Xbox 360 users. Once granted parental permission, Xbox Live child account holders over the age of 13 will be able to access these applications. The Major reminds everyone to make sure to select automatic logins for all the applications, otherwise you will be prompted for parental permission every time an app is launched. We’d have to agree with his advice. After all, Mom coming in to give you and your friends Tang and lemon squares: Cool. Mom coming in to log you into Facebook: Not cool.

Square Enix teases something ’stylish’ for FFXIII

December 14th, 2009 at 03:31pm Under Xbox 360

As if the wait for Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t already difficult enough, Square Enix’s assistant PR director, Sonia Im, is making it even more torturous. On her Twitter account, Im teased “something cool most of you can participate in a few days from now” within a mysterious Square Enix memo. Im later added that the memo “eluded [sic] to something stylish.” If you squint, the date in the memo seems to be December 17, which would coincide with a PSN update.

It’s anybody’s guess past that, but we’re hoping for a totally magical Final Fantasy-themed fancy dress party for us and a few of our closest friends, set inside PlayStation Home. Can you even imagine?

That, or a demo like the one our Japanese friends already have. Either way.

MS enables child accounts for 360 Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm

December 9th, 2009 at 05:40pm Under Xbox 360

When Microsoft rolled out Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm support for the Xbox 360, a number of users were less than impressed. Specifically, those with child Xbox Live accounts were not allowed to use any of the new applications. Outside the US, Microsoft has now released an update that allows child accounts to access these features, so long as parental permission is given. Major Nelson advises users to set each application to log in automatically upon first activation. Otherwise, those with child accounts will be prompted for parental permission every time the application is launched.

Fear not, US gamers, the update will hit American shores on December 15.

Microsoft reveals usage stats for Facebook, Last.fm

November 28th, 2009 at 02:30pm Under Xbox 360

According to Microsoft, nearly two million Xbox Live users logged into Facebook through the console’s new built-in social media applications. Based on a vague estimate provided by Microsoft, it appears that around ten percent of all Xbox Live Gold accounts used the application within its first week of availability; however, it’s possible many of those users only logged in to see the new feature in action.

Microsoft also stated the addition of Last.fm — a music streaming service currently only available for US and UK gamers — prompted nearly one million new profile activations. In its first week, Last.fm users streamed “more than 120 million minutes” of music to their Xbox 360 consoles. If we’ve learned one thing from these numbers, it’s that people love to click on shiny new boxes.

Something “awesome” promised for Uncharted 2 multiplayer this week

November 25th, 2009 at 07:31am Under PS3

According to a tweet on developer Naughty Dog’s official Twitter account, players of Uncharted 2 can expect something “quite awesome” to appear in the multiplayer portion of the game by the end of the week. The post reads:

“Things are looking up that we’re going to have something quite awesome lined up for multiplayer at the end of this week”

What on earth could it be? New multiplayer maps? New modes? Does this form part of the developer’s promised downloadable content (DLC)?

So many questions! We shall simply have to wait until the end of the week, shan’t we?

Posting on his personal Twitter account, president and executive producer at Q-Games (creator of all things PixelJunk) Dylan Cuthbert has revealed that the studio’s next effort, PixelJunk Shooter, has ‘gone gold’,’ although in digital download parlance that probably just means ‘it’s done and has been approved by the platform holder.’

PixelJunk Shooter is expected to release in Japan on December 24th, exclusively on the PlayStation Network, with a release in the West not far behind.

More than 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook

Last week Microsoft launched new social media features for Xbox Live including Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. Yesterday the publisher confirmed that since then millions of Xbox Live users have used these new features.

At least two million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook using their consoles in the first week of its availability according to Microsoft spokesman David Dennis. This equates to roughly one tenth of the 20 million total Xbox Live users trying Facebook in the first week alone.

Last.fm has also proved to be popular with half a million accounts being created in the first 24 hours of availability, with 120 million minutes of music having been streamed in the first week. Dennis did not confirm how many Xbox Live users have made use of the Twitter feature other than to say that there have been “tweets from nearly every market where we have Xbox Live.”

In case you were wondering how the new Zune marketplace (formerly known as the Xbox Live Marketplace) is doing, 1.7 million Xbox Live users have visited and watched video there.

Xbox LIVE Logo Smaller

The Fall update for your Xbox 360 is now available. Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last few months, this is the dreaded/anticipated (depends which side of the fence you are on) update that will include social networking behemoths Twitter and Facebook through the new My Community channel. It also includes Zune Video and Last.FM in the video and music channels respectively.

Now you can instantly update your Facebook status about all your gaming conquests, without leaving the comfort of your living room. Or you can simply annoy your friends about every single achievement update through Twitter. It might be time to invest in one of those keypads to allow for quicker bragging.

On the plus side you get to invite your Facebook friends to play online games with you and you also get to watch high quality HD videos from Zune Video. Finally Last.FM lets you customise your own radio station.

This update will be available the next time you log into Xbox Live. You must be an Xbox Live Gold member to enjoy the Twitter and Facebook features.

Tweet about Xbox Final Fantasy XIII, win a mystery prize

November 13th, 2009 at 05:15pm Under Xbox 360

Let’s say you want to drum up some interest for the Xbox version of a beloved RPG series that has traditionally appeared on the Playstation. What would you do? Why, use Twitter, of course! The Xbox.com Final Fantasy XIII page is holding a social media event of sorts, offering Xbox Live members the chance to win “a secret Xbox Live prize.” The gist of it is pretty simple, register at the Xbox.com Final Fantasy XIII page (US or UK), then post a tweet that contains the #FFXIIIXBOX hash tag and the URL of said Xbox.com page.

Once a certain number of tweets has been reached, the prize will be unlocked. There is no indication of what the prize may be, but we’re hoping for some outlandish spiky hair for our Avatar. Barring that, we’d settle for a giant sword or some bizarrely effeminate accessories.
