Modern Warfare 2 spends fifth week atop UK sales charts

December 14th, 2009 at 11:00am Under DS

War. What is it good for? Super successful games! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may be undergoing a gradual sales slide, dropping another 11 percent this past week, but since the title has maintained the top position on the UK sales chart for a fifth week, it must be sliding down on a pretty fluffy cushion. Call of Duty: World at War held the high ground for five weeks last year before FIFA took it during Christmas week. Speaking of FIFA, the latest installment dropped from second to fifth this week.

Assassin’s Creed 2 couldn’t find the next grip location and holds its position in third. Nintendo has Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at spots two, four and six, respectively. As for premieres, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks rolled in at 12th place and James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game entered at number 29. Now let’s see how Avatar: The Movie That Inspired The Game does. If it’s a hit, that should help sales of the game.

Nintendo DS exceeds 10 million units in the UK

December 10th, 2009 at 03:30pm Under DS+ Wii / Nintendo

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the DS has officially exceeded 10 million units sold in the UK. The revelation comes courtesy of data from European number crunchers GfK Chart-Track and, according to Nintendo, the handheld is currently owned by one out of every six UK residents. Of course, there’s no telling how many people have purchased more than one of the console’s many, many iterations. Still, the DS has managed to reach the 10 million mark faster than the PS2 did, just shy of five years since the handheld launched in March 2005.

We’ve been holding this back for a while now, but it’s probably time to just come out and say it: It looks like the DS is a success.

Modern Warfare 2 maintains top position on UK charts for fourth week

December 7th, 2009 at 12:00pm Under Xbox 360

There’s “No RussianCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 off the top spot on the UK sales charts. Infinity Ward’s mega-hit is killin’ terrorists, civilians and retail at a solid tick, despite the seven percent sales drop from the prior week. The FPS has held the high ground for four weeks now, repelling solid competition from the footie fantasies of FIFA 10 and the hidden blades of Assassin’s Creed 2.

Call of Duty: World at War maintained the number one position on the charts last year for five weeks, before FIFA 09 rushed the goal and scored the top spot during Christmas week. Thanks to retail promotions, game of the year candidate Batman: Arkham Asylum sales surged 122 percent, bringing the Dark Knight back onto the chart in the twenty spot.

Wii sells six million in UK

December 3rd, 2009 at 11:10am Under Wii / Nintendo

Gfk-ChartTrack data indicates that the Wii has passed the six million mark in the UK, one week shy of three years after it launched. Detailing the system’s rise to MCV, ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch said, “In calendar year 2007, it sold 1.81 million – but really took off in 2008, with 2.73 million sold. So far in 2009, it’s hit 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas.” We know to what we should ascribe the console’s success. You guessed it: Escape from Bug Island.

This feat makes Wii the fastest-selling console in the history of the UK. MCV notes that it’s still not the best-selling console, an honor reserved for the over 10-million-strong PS2.

Prince of Persia dialogue writer wins UK Writer’s Guild award

November 30th, 2009 at 09:00pm Under Xbox 360

The 2008 reboot of the Prince of Persia franchise (which, apparently, is getting shut down) featured some of the most enjoyable snark and pith we’ve ever heard in a video game. Fortunately, Andy Walsh, the man responsible for the Prince and Elika’s sharp-tongued exchanges, was recently recognized for his witty dialogue when he won the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Games Award last night in London.

Normally, this is where we’d drop in a quote from Walsh about how excited he was to receive the award, but it doesn’t seem that anyone initiated the optional dialogue with him following the Writers’ Guild awards ceremony. Too bad, something tells us we’ve missed out on the best part.

HMV slashes price for DJ Hero, PSP Go in the UK

November 30th, 2009 at 01:30pm Under Xbox 360

Lucky Brits. Not only do they get to be in closer geographic proximity to the dreamy David Tennant than we do, they’re also extended some amazing post-Thanksgiving deals on typically pricey gaming equipment. Electronics retailer HMV is currently running two such offers in the UK — the company has dropped the price of the PSP Go to £148.99, down significantly from the handheld’s MSRP of £224.99. In addition, it’s reduced the cost for DJ Hero, normally £107.99, down to just £69.99.

We’re not sure how long these prices will stay this low, so if you live in the United Kingdom and have any interest in turntabling or digital distribution revolutions, we suggest you get while the getting is good.

Nintendo UK announces Reflect Missile for DSiWare, releases it

November 28th, 2009 at 09:30pm Under DS

Ready for some fairly unsurprising news? Nintendo UK recently revealed what we all expected yesterday following the OFLC rating of a Q-Games project titled Reflect Missile — the game is designed for the DSiWare platform, and features Breakout-esque gameplay with strategy elements. You have to use a special set of missiles to help you clear out the aforementioned bricks, but you’ve only got a limited number, so ballistic conservation is key.

Ready for some completely flabbergasting news? According to the same Nintendo listing, the game is out right now in the UK. Like, this second, now. You can own it, provided you live in the UK, and have access to the fungible assets required to purchase 500 DSi Points. We’ve contacted Q-Games to find out when Reflect Missile will be fired at North America.

GAME and Activision UK team up for Modern Warfare 2 charity event next weekend

November 25th, 2009 at 08:30pm Under Xbox 360

War Child International is a coalition of organizations that seeks to aid children affected by war. Activision UK and GAME have decided to pitch in and are joining up to host an online event next weekend in Modern Warfare 2, asking that UK citizens play a bit of the game on Xbox Live. The more people enlist for action online, the more Activision UK will donate to the charity.

If you’re looking for more information on the event, there’s a Facebook page and a Twitter account set up to help coordinate. If you’ve got a busy weekend ahead of you on December 4, try to make time for at least one online match. It’s not every day you can make someone else’s life better just by playing a video game.
