For the second week in a row, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken perch atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, fending off valiant advances from newcomers such as Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the process.
Sales of Modern Warfare 2 this past week dropped a massive 86% from its enormous launch week, which makes this chart topping feat all the more impressive.
Assassin’s Creed II (releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP) debuts at No. 2, outperforming the original entry to the series by 12% on launch week (although the original title notably shot straight to No. 1 in its first week of sales in 2007).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii also makes its first chart appearance, only below Assassin’s Creed II at No. 3, while two other Nintendo titles, Wii Sports Resort (sales down 10%) and Wii Fit Plus (sales up 10%) take positions 4 and 5 respectively (dropping from No. 2 and No. 4 respectively).
Fifa 10 (sales down 5%) drops from No. 3 to No. 6 this week, as Left 4 Dead 2, another debut title in the UK, charts at No. 7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games steps down to No. 8 this week from No. 6, Forza Motorsport 3 falls to No. 9 from No. 5 last week, and LEGO Batman: The Videogame appears at No. 10, moving down from No. 7 last week.
Other interesting movement on the UK Software Sales Chart this week includes the debut of Codemasters’ Formula One racing game, F1 2009 on Wii and PSP at No. 11, the debut of LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues at No. 16, Dragon Age: Origins slipping down to No. 17 from No. 13 last week and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City falling to No. 21 from No. 10 last week.
Meanwhile, Football Manager 2010 fumbles its way to No. 23 from No. 12, Style Boutique shoots up the chart to No. 25 this week from No. 40, Uncharted 2 trips and falls to No. 29 from No. 18, Tekken 6 drops to No. 33 from No. 20 last week, DJ Hero continues its poor performance by slipping down further to No. 35 from No. 27, and LittleBigPlanet re-enters the chart at No. 38 thanks to the release of the PSP version.

Under Wii / Nintendo
Wii Sports Resort had a lot riding on its shoulders, not only was it the follow-up to the best selling game of all time Wii Sports, but it was the first of Nintendo’s titles to showcase the highly anticipated Wii MotionPlus accessory. Having seen the incredible precision introduced in first Grand Slam Tennis and then Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, I was interested to see if Nintendo could deliver a title that would live up to the hype.

So the big question really is how does the game shape up against the anticipation the publisher and game industry has created around it. I am happy to answer that in my humble opinion Wii Sports Resort is a resounding success. Nintendo has created another really fun title that gamers and non-gamers alike will enjoy.

After a bit of a dominant streak by Ashes Cricket 2009, remaining at the top of the UK’s All Formats Software Sales chart for a number of weeks, the title of No. 1 on the chart has been passed on to Wii Sports Resort (sales down 12%), up to the top spot from No. 2 last week.
This means that last week’s debut title, Wolfenstein, has to remain content in sitting at No. 2 this week in its first week on sale, being outsold by Sports Resort by 2000 copies, although the first-person shooter did take the No. 1 spot in the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 sales chart.
The previously mentioned Ashes Cricket 2009 (sales down 56%) stumbles a little way to No. 3 this week from No. 1, as Wii Fit (sales down 8%) continues to hang around in the Top Ten at No. 4, down from No. 3 last week. Can it still manage to make its way to No. 1 and break the record for most weeks at the top?
Call of Duty: World at War (sales up 36%) moves up two from No. 7 last week to No. 5, whilst Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (sales down 26%) moves down two places to No. 6 this week from No. 4. Mario Kart Wii, on the other hand, only slips down one place to No. 7 from No. 6 last week.
The fortunes of two of EA’s titles are a little mixed this week, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (sales down 24%) slides down to No. 8 from No. 5, while Fight Night Round 4 (sales down 5%) steps back into the Top Ten, up to No. 9 from No. 12 last week. Prototype (sales down 10%) also manages to steal its way into the Top Ten once more, charting at No. 10 this week from No. 11.
Other interesting movement on the chart this week includes LEGO Batman shooting up No. 12 this week from No. 20, Madden NFL 10 (sales down 43%) dropping to No. 20 from No. 8 last week, G-Force falling out of the Top Ten to No. 13 from No. 9, Assassin’s Creed re-entering the sales chart at No. 24, Guitar Hero: On Tour pulling the same trick and charting at No. 28, as Dead Space (No. 35) SEGA Superstars Tennis (No. 39) and Saints Row 2 (No. 40) get the same idea.
The All Formats UK Software Chart Top Ten follows below:
- Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
- Wolfenstein (Activision Blizzard)
- Ashes Cricket 2009 (Codemasters)
- Wii Fit (Nintendo)
- Call of Duty: World at War (Activision Blizzard)
- Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (Ubisoft)
- Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA)
- Fight Night Round 4 (EA)
- Prototype (Activision Blizzard)

In its first two days on sale, Wii Sports Resort has managed to place itself at No. 1 on the UK Software Sales Chart.
This sales performance by Wii Sports Resort has resulted in the fourth best week one sales of a Wii title, after Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Mario & Sonic at the Olympics.
While the original Wii Sports was never sold separately, and thus never had its sales tracked as an individual game, Chart Track notes that week one sales of the Wii console (which came bundled with Wii Sports) are almost identical to week one sales of Wii Sports Resort.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (sales down 4%) has to settle for a place at No. 2 from No. 1 last week, though, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (sales down 3%) places itself at No. 3. Wii Fit (sales up 3%) sits contentedly at No. 4, while Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (sales down 13%) drops to No. 5 from No. 2 last week.
Fight Night Round 4 (sales down 24%) steps down to No. 6 from No. 5 last week, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (sales down 19%) makes a similar move to No. 7, whereas The Sims 3 (sales down 11%) hangs in the Top Ten by tripping down to No. 8.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (sales down 13%) and EA Sports Active (sales up 8%) are both non-movers at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.
Other interesting movement on the chart this week includes Virtua Tennis 2009 dropping out of the Top Ten from No. 8 to No. 13, Prototype falling down to No. 18 from No. 13, Ghostbusters: The Video Game tumbling to No. 32 from No. 26 last week, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite re-entering the chart at No. 33, and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS also making a reappearance, at No. 40.
