If you’ve been itching to give Wolfenstein a try but aren’t willing to plunk down any cash — a likely possibility at this point — you’ll be happy to know that a Wolfenstein demo is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace in Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States.
If you are somehow unfamiliar with the game allow us to sum up. There are Nazis. They are doing evil, occult-y things. You, the good guy, must stop them. With guns. And magic. If your experience varies significantly from this description, please check the game title. You’re probably playing something else.

Activision has reportedly and voluntarily removed Wolfenstein from German store shelves. Turns out that the German localization team charged with removing the thousands of swastikas found in the latest Nazi frag-fest apparently missed one.
Germany’s no swastika rule in video games has existed for a long time, and the general guideline on the symbol’s use is that it can only be utilized in a historical or artistic context — yeah, let’s ignore the “games as art” conversation. We’ve followed up with Activision for comment and to find out if the game will be re-released in the region at a later date.
In related news, the uncensored Xbox Live demo is out today in: Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States. Nope, Germany’s definitely not on the list. [Shortcut: Add Wolfenstein Demo to your Xbox 360 download queue]

A Wolfenstein demo has magically appeared on Xbox LIVE Marketplace this fine day, allowing those of you who haven’t been able to sample the paranormal World War II shooter a chance to do just that.

“Unleash the Nazis own dark powers against them as you battle unimaginable evil and unexpected foes,” says the brief description, which is about as accurate a one sentence synopsis could ever be.
El33tonline really enjoyed this latest outing for the Wolfenstein franchise, as you can read in our review of the game, so the least you should do is try out the demo and see for yourself.

I have fond memories of Castle Wolfenstein from my PC days and I was looking forward to seeing how it made the transition to the console. Breathe easy gentlemen…they have done us proud and delivered a gem of a game. The science fiction storyline is terrific, the gameplay mechanic is slick and as a result I couldn’t stop playing. Then again I am a sucker for blowing stuff up so this was a perfect match for me.

The action in Wolfenstein kicks off immediately after the events from Return to Castle Wolfenstein. You got it right, the world needs saving again and this time you get to play the role of Officer of Secret Actions (OSA) agent BJ Blazkowicz. Set during World War II in the German town of Isenstadt, your mission is to hook-up with the local Resistance faction and uncover what the Nazis are up to. Rumour has it they are experimenting with a dimension that contains supernatural powers called The Veil. Your job is to get in, blow stuff up and put the Third Reich’s evil aspirations to an end before they can use The Veil to gain the upper hand in the war.

NPD videogame sales numbers were released last week, generated by the NPD market research group in the US, which reveals units sales for the top selling videogame hardware and software in the US only.
With an extended look at sales numbers it’s been revealed that id Software/Raven Software’s World War II themed paranormal shooter, Wolfenstein, performed extremely poorly in the launch days (from August 25th) leading up to when the sales numbers were collated (August 29th), which is typically the period when sales for a game are at their highest.
According to the NPD numbers, Wolfenstein sold only 59 000 copies on the Xbox 360, nearly 30 000 copies on the PS3 and 17 000 units on the PC, amounting to just 106 000 units sold in the US, which is no doubt highly disappointing for all involved, although not entirely unexpected with the news of major layoffs at Raven Software following shortly after the release of the game.
Batman: Arkham Asylum, on the other hand and in stark contrast to the performance of Wolfenstein, has managed to sell an incredible two million units in the two weeks it’s been on sale worldwide.
593 000 of those sales were recorded on PS3 and Xbox 360 in the US alone, according to NPD’s report, up until August 29th.

When the NPD released its figures for August, we noticed Wolfenstein was absent from the top-sellers list. Sure, the title was only available for purchase during a few days of August (it released August 21 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC), but one of those versions had to have sold more than Fossil Fighters, which was in tenth place on the sales chart with 92,000 sold, right? Gamespot says, no.
Apparently, id’s resurrected shooter only sold 106,000 across all platforms — 59,000 units on Xbox 360, 30,000 on PS3 and 16,000 on PC. In other words, the PS2 version of Madden alone outsold combined sales of Wolfenstein. Disappointing, for sure, since you must have really been hoping to get your money back.

Those of you looking to throw down in a challenging series of class-based WWII shootouts should be on the look out on Wolfenstein multiplayer tonight. From 6PM (that’s now!) to 8PM EDT developers from Raven Software — the ones that are left, we assume — and id Software will be on hand to battle for glory against Xbox Live Gold members in another rousing session of Game with Developers.
Unlike the last GwD event, gamers don’t have to pre-purchase content in order to play with the game’s development team! Well, unless you count the game itself. Which, technically, we guess you have to.

Raven Software, an internal development studio at Activision Blizzard, and most recently responsible X-Men Origins: Wolverine and last week’s Wolfenstein, has been hit with a round of layoffs, continuing the industry trend of expanding during peak periods of development, and then reducing the team size when in planning stages for their next game.
In the case of Raven, though, work continues on their recently delayed first-person shooter Singularity, while no other announced titles are known to be in development at the studio.
Sources say that 30 to 35 members of the veteran development studio have been let go following the release of Wolfenstein. A statement from Activision read:
“With the recent completion of both X-Men Origins Wolverine, based on the summer blockbuster movie, and Wolfenstein, the next chapter of the famed franchise, Raven Software is slightly reducing its workforce to better reflect the studio’s upcoming slate.”
The sources, however, go on to say the Wolfenstein was over-budget, and now that it’s been released, is under-performing in the market, while the delay of Singularity forced the studio to shift personnel to that game to speed up development and reduce the delay as necessary.
With these layoffs, Raven has shifted from a studio capable of developing three triple-A games simultaneously, to two.

We’re not sure what’s more impressive: That a cricket game was actually outselling Wii Sports Resort for two weeks in the UK, or that Nintendo’s latest minigame melange only outsold Wolfenstein by 2,000 copies for the week of August 16 to 22. That’s what the latest numbers and report from Chart Track show, placing the id Software / Raven shooter at the top of the PS3, 360 and PC charts for its first week on sale.
We’ll have to wait for NPD’s numbers to see how the FPS fared on this side of the pond, but it’s pretty obvious that — the world over — everybody loves killing some Nazis. Take a peek after the break to see what else the Brits have been buying up lately.
